I guess I am biased ...
Oct 10th, 2008 at 5:22pm

Being gay, I guess I am biased in this, but I would like to think that I would feel the same way, if I was heterosexual.

Regardless, the Connecticut Supreme Court, has just shot down the state's ban against same sex marriages.  It is now the third in the country to do so, after Massachusetts, and California.  Maybe, before TOO much longer, it will be legal in all 50 states!

In talking to people in Massachusetts, who was first to legalize same sex marriage, the people have realized that by allowing same sex marriages, has done absolutely nothing to the existing heterosexual marriages, as so many have claimed it would.  It was claimed that it would ruin the sanctity of opposite sex  marriages.  How idiotic is that?

I am sure there are those, on this site, that are against it, but I can't expect everyone to agree on any subject.  I respect and honor your right to disagree.  But, if you DO disagree, please be respectful, in this and any other discussion that comes up on this board.

Anyhow, I was just excited to see another state santify this right!

Chuck

Would I get married to Ben if it was a legal option in the state of Pennsylvania? Probably not... but then if I were a hetero I probably wouldn't get married either. I just don't roll that way.

Would I fight for another adults right to be married to an adult of their choice regardless of sex, race or creed? I would do it in stiletto heels if I had to. Grin

I forgot to add the link, where I got this information:

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

To quote part of it:
Quote:
"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice," Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote in the majority opinion that overturned a lower court finding.

"To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others," Palmer wrote.

And, Andrew, to answer your question, YES!!!   (That is, if Jonny sez YES!)

Close family friends of ours are a gay couple, Ted and John, they have been together for as long as I've been alive and possibly longer.  So to say that allowing same sex couple marriage endangers the institution of marriage for ANYONE is ludicrous in my opinion.  Ted and John are more committed than most heterosexual couples of their same generation in my hometown.

I support the freedom of people to choose their destination in life.  I support the freedom of people to make mistakes and pay the consequences.  I support the freedom of people to do as they wish in their own homes (based on my fathers set of rules: if yer gonna be stupid ya gotta be tough, and you can do anything you want as long as you don't hurt anyone - including yourself).

I do not support the idea of the average worker bee having to bail out any of the mistakes made by the above freedoms.  So if you get married, same sex or not, you are bound by the same principles as any other human couple (and Swans in the case of the animal world - that's the only animal I can think of that has a single partner for life hehe).  If you screw up and marry someone who is not right for you in whatever ways you find, then you have to deal with the consequences of your choice, whether you are gay or straight.

I am all for two consenting adults who love each other and are commited to be being together have the same legal rights as anyone else.   A homosexual  couple down the street from me being married doesn't take anything away from me as a married hetrosexual.  How  in the world could it?  I'm married....they're married...Jim and I share community property..they share community property, If they get a divorce they have to go through the same exact legal dealings as I would have to, etc.

There is..no doubt,  a LOT more to the proponents AGAINST same sex marriages than anyone realizes.  Their arguments against it,  don't hold water at all.  Not in my mind anyway.  I'll bet it has to do with the almighty buck though.   Angry

Just don't get married in Cambodia.  A divorce could cost you half of your house.....literally.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A couple in rural Cambodia has terminated their 18-year marriage with a divorce settlement that entailed sawing in two the wooden house they once shared, villagers said Friday.

The husband, 42-year-old Moeun Sarim, has taken away with him all the bits and pieces of his half a house, said his 35-year-old wife, Vat Navy.

"Very strange, but this is what my husband wanted," she said by phone from a village about 62 miles east of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. She said they ended their marriage last month.

"He brought his relatives and used saws to cut the house in half," she said, adding that she now owns the other half that is still standing. The house is made from wood with a tile roof and propped up on wooden pillars, a typical style for a Cambodian country home.

She said her estranged husband and his relatives, after ripping apart half of the house, carried all the debris to his parents' house nearby.

She said the divorce was prompted by her husband's jealousy about her alleged relationship with a policeman in the village. She denied having an extramarital affair.

"He wanted a divorce, and I said, `Let's divorce,'" she said.

The husband could not be reached for comment.

Bou Bout, a village chief, said local officials and police were present as witnesses the day the couple split their 20-by-24 1/2 foot house into half.

"Local officials tried three times to get them to mend their differences, but the husband would not budge," Bou Bout said by phone.

Chuck, my friend.

I am one who would disagree with you for more reasons than could be gone into here, nor is this the place.  HOWEVER, I could never disrespect you.  You have become a friend that I cherish very highly.  I can only hope for you happiness and that you find what it is you are searching for.

I've never understood the point of view that it could sully the sanctity of marriage. I don't think I ever will.

I hope soon to see it legalized in all 50 states. I know so many couples that right now, would have to leave their state to get married. It makes me sad that we still haven't gotten over issues like this...

I hope it'll be legal in ALL 52 states soon, and one day the world over.
And no, you're not biased just coz of being gay. I'm straight as an arrow but have always been a supporter of same sex rights.

I can have a lot of criticism about my country (the NL), but one particular thing I've always been very proud off, is our tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality. I know of no one who is homophobic, it is a normal part of our daily lives.

All the best wishes from the Netherlands to you Chuck.
