If it were up to me.........

There would be some DIRECT accountablility in our government.

Something along the lines of, lets say, all members of the senate and congress, and the execuative branch all have pay tied to the welfare of the nation.

How exactly? I dunno. But when the economy sucks, we all lose our jobs, pay higher taxes, higher energy costs, and make less money. Why shouldn't they?

Maybe for very point unemployment rises they get docked a % of their pay.

Or fior every so many points of unemployment, somone in these branches loses their job.

Why is it the private sector suffers when times are tough and they get to skate?

Maybe if it directly affected them they would be a little more poractive about it.

I also am for every government official who has children being required to send their children to war if they are voting in favor of a war. Then those who really believe in the cause will be able to prove it, intead of just saying it.

Simple. Politics is used as a refuge for unconscientious objectors.

I agree SuperH ... I think Congress needs to take a Pay CUT and a little cut in their office personnel and start doing a little of their own work for a change. (Like reading their mail so they'll know how WE feel!).

I haven't really seen the govt having big layoffs like the rest of the country -- they're adding workers to cover their butts... (at our expense).

And when our country's falling apart - where is CONGRESS -- at home campaigning! And we're paying them to do that. I think they should get their shiney rears back to DC and get back to work!

Term limits!  If the presidency can be limited why not the congress and senate?

Direct accountability has been dead for a long time.

The politicians of today make the robber barons of the 20s and 30s look like shoplifters.

Why is it that the Lehman Brothers board of directors can steal millions from people like little old ladies in Peoria, yet somebody who doesn't let the government know about 500 bucks worth of income gets thrown in Leavenworth for 6 months?

Term limits have a schizophrenic history. They are very popular when the outs have a hard time getting back in power. The idea tends to recede once the objective is won. It's a bad idea and the reason Guliani had to step down. It was a crime. No one since LaGuardia was ever so well matched for the job of Mayor of NYC
