Computer help
Oct 13th, 2008 at 5:57pm

Recently my internet access has slowed way down, to the point that when I tried to upgrade Adobe it was downloading at15kbs and slower!  this started about two months ago and has progressively gotten worse.  It is even slower than my old dial-up was.  (I have SBCYahoo DSL).

I did a virus scan and checked Spybot, and found no problems.
Does this sound like a problem on my end, or is it a problem with AT&T?  Thanks for the help.

Jerry
(I am using Mozilla Firefox, not IE)

You could have more people in your area switching to DSL, which will slow it down until they make a bigger "pipe-line".  Have you checked the strength of your connection?

According to Speedtest I had a 735kbs download and a 321kbs upload.  Whenever I download anything else it sure runs a lot slower than that!
In fact, when I tried to open CH.com it took almost 2 minutes for the page to open.

Tried getting some help from AT&T online.  They said to use their online diagnostic tool, but to do that I would have to get rid of Mozilla and redownload Internet Explorer.  Not happening.  Or, I can take a day off of work to contact their support people by phone, cause they only "work" business hours.  I tried for years to get rid of AT&T, but they keep buying up whatever company i go to.

If all else fails, you might have the phone company check your DSL line.

I have cable, but I ended up having to have the line from the box to the house replaced last year--it had deteriorated to the point where the signal strength was about a tenth what it should have been.

I wonder about people piggybacking off my wireless network as well--if you've got a neighboring YouTube addict madly downloading off your (free) connection, that may be slowing things down as well.  I've got the thing password-protected now, and the only drag I notice on the download speeds these days is when the kid is in the back of the house doing sophisticated stuff to one of her websites.

But what do I know about it, eh?  Little to nothing if truth be told.   Roll Eyes

Best,

George

Jerry: go to ccleaner.com its begging wear they have about three PayPal buttons on their site but if you go down past them you find the free download button. Its a pretty good program for going through your machine and clearing out all the useless stuff that might be causing you probs. That nothing else is catching. The directions are pretty straight forward. Get in touch with me if you have any questions on its use.
There are a few other things we can do to get your speed up. But I would like to see you run CC Cleaner first.

FYI: Unless you are an advanced user removing IE is not an option. All you probably did was to make Firefox your default browser. IE is still installed and can be used when it has too.

Maybe you are behind some lazy routers.

In that case a simple speed test gives over-optimistic results.

I use the speed test of 2wire.com (Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register). It measures the time to download a website, with all the requests, handshaking and what have you.

For me this speed is usually ~90% of that of a large download, that in most cases runs near the speed I pay for (1200 kps).

                 Smiley

Edit to add:

It is easy to boost the speed by 20%: As a standard Windows only uses 80% of the bandwith. The remaining 20% are not used to phone home Smiley, but give other computers using the same internet connection a chance too. If there is only one machine at your internet connection, you can use the full bandwith by setting
at the key
       [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Psched]
the dword value
       "NonBestEffortLimit"=dword:00000000

It can be common now-days for the dns cache in Windows to become to big, thus defeating it's purpose. Try flushing it manually.

1. Start - run

2. Type "cmd" in the box (without the quotes) and hit enter
a black box will open up with a command prompt

3. type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter

It will say something about successfullness if you do it correctly
close the window and browse on.

Thanks for the input.  I ran ccleaner and flushed the DNS, and it seems to be working a little faster.  Was able to download a couple of videos without having to wait for it to load while watching, so I know it is a little better.  Still not as fast as it should be, but we'll see what happens.

   Jerry:
What Paul said is correct. Firefox is just your default browser. You can still call up IE (yuch) and use it while talking to the dopes at the ISPs helldesk support drones.
They're just monkeys reading from a flow chart on their screens. But sometimes they get it right. And if they don't. Just escalate the call until you get a level 2 or 1 tech. They as a rule know what they are doing.
Although, other than memory management, we've run you through most of the drills.

Connection Tweaking-
As always make a full back of your registry before editing it in anyway.
To backup your registry click start>run>type regedit>pick file name>Export>choose file name and save
location>hit ok and wait for it to finish.
I would recommend CableNut (its not just for cable btw)
CableNut Home Page Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
Download the latest version (4.08) and install it.
Run CableNut (when you run the desktop shortcut it may just open a explorer window, just double click on
adjuster.exe to run the program) and a window will pop up with a lot of options to input values. But before
you freak out and close it, visit CableNut Tweak Settings Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
Go ahead and pick ur connection type, leave the MTU box empty. Then enter your connections download and upload
caps in kilobits per second (kbps),
and enter in your expected latency if you know what it is and hit Compute Settings. All of the boxes will fill
with numbers, scroll down a bit till you see "CSS File Download" Click that and save the file to your desktop
or where ever you like really. Now go back to cable nut and Pick File>Open Custom Settings File and pick the
files you just saved to your PC. Click Save to Registry, click ok twice then click done and restart PC for the
settings to take affect.
Doing this should optimize your connection overall, you wont see a huge difference, but you should see a
slight difference overall.

Hope this helps.

Matt, with all due respect, did you read where Jerry said he didnt know much about puters?

I know probably twice as much as he does (which aint much) and I would never try to follow what you just wrote.

I know your trying to help, but try and think of how much experience the dude has before filling his head with what is second nature to you.

I dont mean to speak for you, Jerry, but even I would not try to follow that. Im afarid I would fuck my rig up real good.

No offense to you, Matt.  Smiley

hi Matt, and Jonny,

Thanks for the input.  Jonny is right, I don't have a clue what you are talking about, Embarrassed but I'll try to learn.  I've got a good friend who teaches a computer applications class at the school.  I think I"ll take the puter in with me when I can get back to work and see if he can help me tweak it.  Maybe I'll learn something a little more than how to turn it on and get to this site. Smiley  (I do know a little more than that, but not much!)
