Winter is A-Comin' In
Oct 13th, 2008 at 7:39pm

After the burst of cooler weather we've had in the past week (including the early snowfall we had a couple days ago) the migratory birds are now on the move.

The swallows have all departed, as have the hummingbirds.  The valley quail are forming into large coveys, and I saw the first dark-eyed junco in the back yard today.

Ready or not...

Best,

George

Those Canadian geese should be going over-head any day now where I live.   I love to hear them.

I had a friend who tried to nurse a sick Canadian goose who landed in his back-yard in Redding, Ca. where I live.  I think it had a broken leg or something.  Someone in the "hood" decided to turn him in.. to fish and game wardens.   Several months of trials and many, MANY  thousands of dollars worth of fines later...

No good deed goes unpunished I guess.   And people wonder why I am so very negative.   Angry   The guy was just trying to help and from then on he decided it was of NO use to help anything or anyone.   Can't say I blame him.   Undecided

The only way we know winter is here in Florida is it get a little colder.  No seasons.. Oh how I miss the seasons.

It's still in the upper 80's here.

in the 80's here in Philly.  I am golfing tomorrow with perfect weather.  But looking forward to the first snowfall here.  Always been a big fan of the snow.  Especially the 2ft storms.  Shoveling snow and drinking beer is one of my favorite past times

It's only in the 60's here today!  Break out the sweaters!  Yay!  The fall colors should be coming out soon!  I love this time of year!  Winter's not so bad either!

Barn swallows and Purple Martins are my favorite birds.  When I lived in the Cleveland area, we tried for years to attract the Purple Martins but everytime we got a couple interested, the Starlings would chase them away.  We had the proper house and hole dimensions and the creek near by.

Then we had a pair of Blue Birds that nested and layed eggs, only to be broken and dropped on the ground by Wrens.  I used to like Wrens until then.

Have you ever seen Sandhill Cranes?  We have quite a few of them down here.  Storks too.  First time I saw one of them ( I don't know what kind they are) I thought it's head had been scarred by a fire.  Poor things are not pretty.

We have lots of Purple Martins around here too.  They can be kind of messy but pretty to look at.  My favorite are a couple Woodpeckers that come back every year.   My Hummingbirds have been gone awhile now.  I miss them.

We have a frost advisory here for tonight.  Warnings for the weekend.  It won't be long until the white stuff gets here.

I can't wait for the first cold front to hit here. That means I can actually go spend time outside! Cheesy I'm looking foreward to it.

As far as I'm concerned, cluster busting has been the best treatment I've tried. No migraines since I started it, and my hits have gotten so much better. Wanna know more?

My exact words!! It was 80 yesterday and has barely hit 60 today. I know for you northerners thats still fairly warm but I just don't like it. Sorry Donna, but I would LOVE to live in Florida and wouldn't miss the change of seasons. Someday maybe......

Oh yes, I miss the seasons, but I wouldn't move back up to the snow belt for less than a million dollars.  No chapped lips!  No chapped hands or ankles, or blue toes and noses.

I miss the white Christmas Eve with colors shining on the snow from the colored lights (ever see a Palm Tree with lights?)

But I really miss the crocus', the tulips and dogwood, lillies of the valley, daffodils, sugar maples, song birds, bon fires, marshmallows hot and slightly burned......Oh, I'm talking myself into coming back.

Later,
Donna

We could trade houses for Christmas Donna! I spent a week in Dec. in Maui and loved it. It was a bit strange but lap swimming outside, overlooking the palm trees and the sunshine made it all worth it.

When we lived in Tucson inthe 60's, it was customary to decorate tumbleweeds with little twinkling lights. I guess you just work with what you have!

Mel, we had a fireplace when I lived in the Cleveland area.  I used to cook steaks in an iron skillet on it.  Ever try that?  Best you ever tasted!!

You're making me envious.  Florida is nice, but so limited.

No, but we do do that on our fire pit outside.

I remember back when I lived with my grandparents we'd roast marshmallows in to make smores in their fireplace.  Those were good memories. Smiley
