The price per gallon may rebound by several dollars, but the bigger indeterminent that is busting my @ss is the couple penny increase in fed tax.  Did I get it right?

Oh.  It will never go below 18.4 cents.  Not a big point.

The potential for the gas pricing on the upside seems more affecting.

No.  No.  I was just trying to understand the greater concern of a couple pennies per gallon over what a potential several dollar increase was all about.  A conversation that brings some curiosity to it.

So you are obviously not curious about taxes going up just supply and demand vs pennies out of your pocket? My 90 yr old Grandmother would eat you for lunch if you said that to her (literally).

The biggest indeterminent busting my @ss in the future you say is that couple pennies per gallon, not the possible few dollar increase per gallon?  I remember simple math, some greater than and less than stuff.  It kind of makes this less understandable but not as curious now.

There are other costs that are a much more huge determinant than taxes.  Comparing the highest with the lowest state and federal taxes on gas:

  Quote:
Fuel taxes

California vs Alaska, July 25, 2007   cents per gallon

State gas excise tax:  CA: 18      AK: 8

Other state taxes (general sales tax, average county/local sales tax, environmental fees, wholesale taxes):   CA  26.4 (7.25% + 1.2)    AK:  0

State tax total:  CA:  44.4     AK:  8

State + federal tax total:    CA: 62.8     AK: 26.4

Alaska's taxes are 36 cents less per gallon than in California.  However, the average price of gas in Alaska is 70 cents higher than California.  It appears there is a difference to account of over a dollar per gallon (36 cents less tax, 70 cents higher in price) that is not related to taxes.

And the biggest indeterminate is how much the congress will take advantage of the low prices and bust your ass with the levy to come just after January 20th. Your wealth will be redistributed! Angry

I know, it was that redistribution of wealth thing that really got to you. Grin

Gas is about $2.35 a gal here.  Approx 1/2 what it was at it's peak.  Oil is less than $50/bbl approx 1/3 what it was at it's peak.  Gas is much higher at the pump now than it was the last time the price of oil was around $50 / bbl and people are thinking this is great.

Something is wrong.  Congress really showed the oil companys who's boss when they paraded the heads of the oil companys in front of them to get answers.  Congress likes high prices.  It means more tax revenue.

Yes paul but the consumption is what drives the tax revenue. The tax is the same per gal if it's $1 or $4 per gal. With consumption dropping, the tax will have to be a 2X increase to puff the general fund enough to satisfy the gov. Angry

Check this....Mass residents voted to abolish the income tax three weeks ago, it was 70 to 30 to keep the tax.....(Idiots)

Since then the state has said they are going to double the tolls (that were paid for 20 years ago) and raise the gas tax.

Can you say SHEEPOLE?  Angry

Jonny,

Here's an interview with the Transportation Secretary last year.

The situation:

Quote:
GWEN IFILL: The president came out after the Minneapolis bridge collapse and said, "Secretary Mary Peters will be my point person on this and will fix this problem." And then he came out a few days later and said, "Taxes will not go up." A $188 billion infrastructure problem, how do you begin?

It goes on to mention solutions like "congestion pricing" for users, it seems a pretty heady fee.

Quote:
GWEN IFILL: No, but I mean -- I guess I mean is for the part that they asked for where they would essentially charge commuters coming into Manhattan eight dollars a head. Did you approve that part of it?

MARY PETERS: What we approved was the project that they would pursue, congestion relief, pricing techniques to pursue congestion relief in New York City and that they would achieve the results that they had proposed in their initial proposal to us.

You may be aware that the state legislature created a committee that is tasked with looking at various ways to relieve congestion in the city. What we have said is, you have to meet the result. You have to use congestion pricing. You have to meet the result, in terms of a substantial decrease in the congestion in your city, but we're not specific in terms of how they do that.

GWEN IFILL: Do you think that's a good idea, or is it a tax on commuters?

...

GWEN IFILL: Is the distinction between this and a gas tax, say, a distinction between a mandatory tax and an optional tax?

MARY PETERS: Well, somewhat that is the case, certainly, because people can choose to go into an area where there's congestion pricing or not. But I think the real user fee benefit of this is people are paying where they're using the system and they're seeing direct benefits from where they're using the system.

And that's where I think the real win for the American public is. When you or I pay our gas taxes today, we don't really know where that money is going to go or whether or not it's going to benefit us right directly in our community or not.

Boston is not mentioned but what you posted sounds like this type of user fee.  The interview talks about earmarks and spending properly, at the end she mentions this money being spent more directly on the area, however, being spent properly is... what was that tunnel in Boston called?   Wink

I have no idea what the taxes per gallon are in west Texas, but I paid $1.56/gal today. I couldn't be happier. It went from $73 per tank to $36 per tank. That is something I can be happy about.
Now about that car that runs on bullshit. Washington DC alone could supply the nation...southern California a close second.

$1.75!  I'm watching the market today tho, and it's up 500+ points.  If this trend keeps up, I'm not gonna hold my breath and just imagine I'm paying $3.85 a gallon. Undecided

I bet western NY gas is below $2 on the Seneca reservation. Of course from Jamestown, it's a 44 mile round trip.

There is something very fishy about gas prices over here. It's about the same in my county.

$1.69 in Northern Va for Reg Uleaded. Unfortunately for me, my car requires 92+ Octane. I did capitalize on $1.89/gal in Moyock, NC for Reg UL a few weeks ago when I took a trip to the Outer Banks of NC to fish. Only cost $45.00 to fill up my Expedition!!! I had not seen that in a long time.
