Job Opportunity in Puerto Rico
Oct 19th, 2008 at 7:00pm

I have a job opportunity in Puerto Rico. It's for the same company I currently work for and have been with for 9 years.

We currently have an office inside of an electrical plant, supplying them with all of their MRO product (mainly replacement parts for the presses, etc). They also have several plants in Puerto Rico and I spoke with the District Manager in January, as they were going to try to set up offices inside some of the plants.

It appears they are getting a final decision this week, and the DM asked me if I was still interested. He's going to call me this week to discuss it.

Anyone know about Puerto Rico? I believe this plant is on the north side of the island, not in San Juan. I know it's warm there year round, and it's an American territory, so it's like living in the US.

My spanish is rusty, but I'm sure I'll pick up on it soon enough. I'm wondering about the logistics of moving there. Does anyone know about living expenses? Has anyone been there? What can you tell me? I guess I'll have to sell my truck.  Undecided

I'm looking forward to this, if we get it. What a great place to go and live for awhile!

We have a plant there.....some people I know have gone down to work there on a temporary basis. A few liked it, a few couldn't stand it. One even came back after only a week.

I might go for a month or so, I doubt I'd move down there unless I could make enough money to retire earlier.

My comparison isn't great but I lived in Panama when I was 10. The experience stayed with me forever. I loved the warm tropical climate, the endless water to play, surf and swim in and the lush vegetation. I was a child though so maybe this doesn't count. I learned Spanish quickly because so much was in Spanish. We lived in the Canal Zone so it always felt safe. My Mom was from upstate NY and didn't really care for the heat and humidity. I imagine Puerto Rico would have some of these qualities. My sisters best friend did her first 10 years or so of teaching and loved it. Good luck with your decision. I would go in a heart beat!

If this works out, then I'd be there for 2 years at least. Sounds nice, being on an island in the Caribbean. I could live with warm temps in the winter.   Wink

I will have some questions, for sure, about the job, and the environment. I'm sure it will be different from the plant I'm working in now, I've spoken to a few different people there over the last few weeks. The manufacturing manager from the plant I'm working in now went there last year to manage one there, so I'd probably be working with him a lot.

I'm really curious as to how to move there. How do I get my belongings there?

I'm also curious as to the cost of living. My apartment now is fairly good size, and the rent is reasonable, would like to find a house that is slightly larger. I need to have a yard sale before I go, ha ha.

Not sure about cost of living there.
To move your stuff, you probably would have to rent a container.  They haul the container OTR to the port and it is shipped to PR.  I am not sure, but would assume it is quite expensive.
You should also check out any import fees or other duty.  They might want to tax you, especially for a car or 2.

I have been there twice.  I liked it.

It might be cheaper to rent a "furnished" place and store your stuff until you return. Or the company probably has info on shipping (they may do it for you).

I've never lived there, but have in other countries -- it's always a great experience I think. Living in another country is always different than just visiting for a few days. Gives you a whole new outlook on what we have here.

Good luck.

My son is living in Hawaii right now. They took the minimal amount with them and put the rest in storage then rented a furnished place. They even sold their cars before going and bought when they got there. We did the same thing with our cars when we went to Panama. If you have pets, look into quarantine rules too. If you start ahead you can do most of it in the states.

Thanks Brian, someone else told me about a container. I don't think I'd ship my truck, it would go by weight probably. PR wouldn't charge an import fee or duty would they, since they are a US territory? I'll have to find out. I know I wouldn't have to go through customs, since I'm a US citizen.

There's also an opportunity for the same position in the Dominican Republic. Where I'd need a passport to get in, and would have to go through customs. I think PR would be the place to go.

Barb, you are right, when you live somewhere else, it definitely puts a different perspective on things. Also, with Charlotte, maybe renting a furnished, or partially furnished place would be the way to go. Would definitely cost less to move if I stored most of my stuff, and then I wouldn't have to have a yard sale first. Wink

I was thinking about selling my truck, and getting a vehicle there. I also have a really cool trike (well, it's Kirk's old one, but it's still cool) that I could get around with.

I asked for the location of the plant in PR, so I can do some research. And Char, thanks for the info on pets. That is something I didn't think about, but I'll check into it, with our two cats.

I've lived in Japan, England, Germany and did a short time in Australia too.

One thing I have learned... only bring what you deem "can't live without".  A truck can be bought, leased or rented anywhere.  Shipping something that big is a waste of resources no matter how you slice it.  Plus, you may discover you don't even need a vehicle, depending on where you are going.  And if you did bring in a vehicle, some places have wildly different operational requirements that require changes to your vehicle.  It ain't worth the trouble.

Store your stuff... Granted, I never paid to move stuff, the company always paid.  BUT I did lose a lot of stuff in the move.  Stuff was damaged, got wet, mildew, etc.  Plus, it took 2 months to ship it from door to door.  Not worth it.  Pack what you need in a suitcase and have fun in your new location.

Thanks Shawn, for the info. I'm definitely not taking my truck, I'll sell it. PR is pretty small, and I found out the plant is in Aceribo, so, my bike will probably suffice. I will need a car to get to San Juan occasionally, but I can get one there.

I've been thinking about what to take. Storage is a good idea. Plus with the climate there, my furniture wouldn't be the best thing to use there. Company pays for the move, but I still don't want to take much. There will be some stuff I need, but not that much. Mainly the electronics. And I'll probably ship that stuff myself.

I do want to fly down and see the plant, and what I'm actually doing before I commit. I know it's a culture change, but I adapt pretty easily.

Brian, I hear ya about the DR, but I'd have to go through a bunch of red tape to get in, not to mention customs. I think I'll stick with PR.

On the electronics, make sure you can use what you want to bring.  You should be OK with almost everything in PR, they use 120v 60 hz just like we do, and their TV system is NTSC.  Still, some of that stuff isn't worth the hassle to transport.  I had the best luck finding furnished places to lease, so really all I had to do was figure out where to shop for groceries (not as easy as it sounds)

Hey Purpley,

What an opportunity! My OH and I are going through EXACTLY the same thing now. We're moving from mainland UK to the island of Guernsey (just off the coast of France). We leave here in 4 weeks and have SO much to think about.

We're trying to pack up our house (furnished properties are hard to come by there), give the whole thing a lick of paint so it'll rent out nice and easy and finalise our wedding plans all before leaving. Yet, here I am, procrastinating... Roll Eyes

You have to make the most of the opportunities that are presented to you. Best of luck with your move! Keep us updated.

I've been there on a cruise, so that doesn't count.  I did love it there though even with the humidity.

I just have one question.  Waddaya gonna do with Kirk?

I was in Puerto Rico about 10 years ago on vacation.  I remember they like to dress up at night, the weather was beautiful, and the people were friendly.  Of course, since it is an island, everything will be more expensive.  Most apartments and houses come furnished, lots of block buildings and wrought iron fences.

Sounds like an adventure.  Enjoy  Smiley

I suppose I'll have to roll him along on his bike trike. Besides, I need him to work on mine. Those are two things we will have to move, and boxed up and packaged correctly, they will take up some room. Climate controlled storage will have to be investigated on my end.

I'd like for us to hop a train to the PNW before, if this happens. So he can get a taste of home. I know he misses it. We'll see how long it takes to do this and find out one way or another.   Smiley

Funny, My sweetie and I are considering moving to Puerto Rico also.  She works for the VA and there are openings, but we have to sell the house and the market has to rebound first.
I have a friend from the ARMY days that lives in San Jaun and he tells me its a little cooler there than living in Miami or Naples was, Lots of recreational stuff to do, but I lived in the heat and humidity and storms of Florida all my life until 2 years ago,  I miss it a great deal!
I do know you can count on rain about 250 days out of the year, but its short lived and moves across the island quickly, Speaking Spanish will really be a plus!!   John

Chris:

Whatever you decide to do, I'm proud of you to consider it!  I did the whole Ex-Pat thing from 89-90 in The Netherlands.  It was quite the eye-opener.  I loved The Netherlands, hated the work, by the way.

Or no common sense!!

It's an exciting time. Just have to keep focused on the positives.

One piece of advice I was given (which I thought was quite good) was to expect the homesickness - that way when it arrives, you're mentally prepared to deal with it better. Come up with some tactics to get rid of it.

OH and I recently started taking golf lessons (we wanted to learn something together that we could do on our honeymoon!), so we've already checked out the local range and pitch'n'putt so we know we can head there to take our minds off those feelings when they arrive. That, and bake LOTS of cookies and cakes and comfort food.

Wishing you the best of luck!
