My mom brought me a pound of that KONA back from Hawaii and the stuff made my stomach hurt so bad that I gave it away to a friend. It must be highly acetic or something.

mmmmm Kona.... never had it hurt my stomach.  Too bad... more for me.   Wink

Another *excellent* coffee, in my opinion, is Illy.  It's also not cheap, but they produce a consistent flavor that gets an A+.  For espresso, it's hard to beat Illy.

why is it the secont cup of coffee anyone has in the morning never is as good as the first?     Even if your second cup was the first pour from a fresh brew made the same way!  I never could figure this one out.

Well Paul...I'm not ob-1 but I have a theory about that.

After drinking that first cup your taste buds are slightly fried.  Same thing with ice cream.  That first spoonful tastes much better than subsequent ones because the cold has numbed them somewhat.

Hmmm....could be.  Kind of like being desensitized to a smell.

I wonder if the same is true with decaf.  Wonder how much the caffeen plays a role in it.

Instant coffee is usually made from robusta beans, which have a different flavor from the arabica beans - robusta are stronger, less complex. Freeze-drying pulls off some of the aromatic oils.  I think instant coffee is generally inferior, although the stuff on the airplanes is not too bad.

Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy every cup as much as the first.

One of my coffee home coffee machines (a Jura S9) actually keeps track of how many shots I have made.  In the 2 years that I have owned it, using it only when I'm home (I travel 40% of the time at least) I have made over 2500 double shots.  Even if you average that out like I was home every day, that's 6.8 double shots per day.

I probably drink too much coffee.  That might be why I ended up in the hospital last month with a heart problem... since then, I've cut back to 2 shots a day and everything iseems fine.

I went through the whole 'no coffee, no chocolate, no nothing' routine with each one of my neurologists.  Apart from missing my cuppa, it didn't affect me.  I didn't even get the famous 'cofee headache' most people get when trying to quit.

Folgers uses a blend of Robusta and Aribica.  It's not all Aribica, but it is a good blend.

Super Market here has a great coffee bar but they charge too much for refills. Also: $.54 for a "shot of espresso" to punch up your coffee. Good stuff and Kona is good too.  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Hortons coffee is terrific. Everybody exchanges it as a Christmas gift.

Guys my age get McDonalds senior coffee for something like 60 cents or so. Here, it's not too bad to slurp along with one of their hot fudge sundaes. God, that chocolate sauce at McDonalds is good.

If I have any leftover coffee still in the pot when I get home, I'll put it in a glass with crushed ice, 1/2 & 1/2, splenda, shake it up and drink.  YUM!

My very favorite restaurant in town (Rusty's) had the BEST coffee.  I do not remember what kind it was, but it was delicious!  One night I was there and ordered a cup after dinner and noticed it was NOT the same.  When I asked about it, I was told that they discontinued their coffee service due to the high cost.  I was heartbroken, seriously, it was that good.  Within six months they closed thier doors (after 40+ years in business).  I'm still not over it.  Sad

I shall leave it as a product of your imagination what coffee on a Crab Fishing Boat can be like. You will be awake.
While at home, I like Sumatrin. Usually done in either a Vacumn pot or a coffee press. Generally I make it strong enough to come out about 200 Mg of caffeine per cup. Any stronger than that and it becomes bitter. Sort of like too much Squid ink or fish gure in the coffee.

You're all wrong..... You just haven't had a cup of coffee till you're sitting in the French Quarter in New Orleans and have one of those "little" cups of whatever they serve there with the little square donuts (binequets or whatever they call them). NOW THAT'S COFFEE.

Cafe au lait and beignets in the Cafe du Monde in the Vieux Carre....   Smiley  Long while since I've been there, hobnobbing with EJ's weird NO relatives, watching the nuns and transvestites and artists and foodies go by, listening to the relatives speaking all that bloody French that I don't understand...

Lots of good memories.

Best,

George

Someone mentioned restaurant coffee a bit ago and it reminded me of the weekend Linda and I spent at the Radisson in Charleston SC years ago.  The poor waitress about wore her shoes out bringing me reifills!  I tried to buy some of it when we left, but they would not sell any of it other than what they served, not even to carry out!

If you are in the Chicago area, Papanicholas has an excellent Kona.  Don't get it often as it is pricey.

Tim Hortons is great!

Gonna go make a fresh pot now.
