Cat - These were shot with a Nikon D200. The trick is to get close.

Carolyn, to answer your question - I used a mid-range Sigma 100-300 zoom lens - not exactly pro level equipment, but lots of bang for the buck IMO.

It's one of the few lenses that I've kept through the process of downsizing. On the used market, I just couldn't get enough for money out of to justify getting rid of it. All of my expensive stuff is long gone.

I have hundreds of images like these because I too, loved to sit and watch them. That's also the only way to get close. One-foot-at-a-time.
