Convention 2009 ...
Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:25am

It looks like no one has come up to bat to volunteer to help host the 2009 convention.  BOY is it late this year to decide!  I can remember where we knew almost a full year in advance ... Oh well ...

SOMEBODY needs to step up, and SOON, to offer your city to host it.  I would if I lived in a better location, I would, but, alas, I don't.  Besides, we need one on the left coast for a change.

Come on, all you left coasters!  Let's get moving!  Time is  a'waistin'!

In order to host, you need to be by a major, international airport, preferably a "hub" airport.  You need a decent hotel, with reasonable rates and accommodations, and SMOKING policy.  It should also be near the airport, or free shuttle service available, if further away.  It would also be great if there were local attractions nearby, for those wishing to sight see. (Myself, I never seem to even leave the hotel!)

This will be ourTENTH year, so let's make it a memorable one!  (ALL of them are memorable, but let's try to make this one extra special!)

I would surmise that you haven't spent much time on the left coast recently, Chuck. Smoking is banned in many outdoor areas, let alone indoors.  (Not that it has an impact on me personally anymore  Smiley)

Where there is Oxygen, you must use proper caution.
So be safe, don't smoke while using O2. Kill the pain and not yourself.

Here in Florida on the Gulf Coast, there are plenty of restaurants with outside dining which allows smoking.  Hotels.........I don't know but can check that tomorrow am.

If I were to host, I'd need a lot of help since I have a personal committment right now.

We have the airport, and all other features to make for a memorable convention.

Just a quick search found this     Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
Note the smoking rooms.

Rates are naturally higher after Easter thru October/November.

Any serious helpers out there?

And I'd be able to attend my first convention!!

Add some California public beaches, parks, public streets and hiking trails to the list too.

Anyone (Yes, Donna, I will even include YOU in this) that is willing to host the convention, I would be more than happy to help.  BUT, there is already a team, in OUCH, to help.  I am willing to help also.

The main thing is that there has to be a local person, to do the local running around.

Ok, you left coast, tree huggin', nut and berries, if that is the way it is, then I guess that is the way it is!   Wink Grin

How about Vegas?  You can't tell me that THEY have a no smoking policy!  Anyone in Vegas want to host?

I'll vote for Vegas -- it would be fitting.... Our FIRST convention was there 10 years ago.... (any oldtimers remember that one?).

Bob G. is in Henderson (ok BG - check in!). Woobie is out there somewhere too (isn't she?) Bob P. did a great job planning and putting that one together in no time flat and everyone had a great time (in between headaches and crying and hugging and DJ putting bubble bath in the whirlpool!).

There's plenty of hotels (airport no problem), plenty to see and do, it's realitively economical (compared to a lot of places) and we can SMOKE. And depending on where you are and what you're doing there's lots of FREE booze! (Save Jonny a bar tab!).

But, as Chuck says - time is getting short. I also urge OUCH to pick Vegas for this 10 year anniversary of OUCH.

We've been to the East Coast and down the middle central. Now it's time to GO WEST.....

It would be nice to have an idea where it was going to be so I could start saving for the flight and expenses.  A flight from Charlotte NC to Vegas is only $345 round trip, and that's with priceline, the military discount sites don't have flights up that far out yet, so would likely be cheaper still.

I'm happy to go anywhere really, as long as I can smoke and start saving for it NOW.

Check out the SouthPoint Casino! 4 miles south of town, not all of the hustle and bustle of the Strip. The food is very reasonable, a FREE shuttle right from the airport directly to the hotel, all kinds of stuff to do and the rooms are beautiful and have LCD TV's and pillow-top mattreses. Bowling, 16 movie theaters etc. And the place is not crowded. They even have a deli if you just want a sandwich. It's the casino the locals all go to.

They also have a shuttle that will take you to the Mandalay Bay if you want to go to the strip. The machines are looser, and they keep the drinks coming. Not like at a casino on the strip. Barb and I found this place in May and absolutely fell in love with it.

Trust me, it's nice and the mountains are right outside you window for some awesome pictures. I will never stay anywhere else again.

A lot of you have no idea of what is entailed in putting on a convention.  It must be near an international airport or at least a tranferable one.  Must have a shuttle,  reasonably priced, block of rooms for OUCH, getting speakers, , price of the food, smoking considerations, area attractions for those who would like to sight-see,  etc etc etc etc.

This year we have a convention committee in place to help with ALL of that.  In years past Cat, Leesa, Elaine...etc have had to do the majority of it all.  Not so this year.  You will have help in all areas.

Please do not just simply suggest we have it in Timbucktoo (for instance)because it is a pretty place or near you.   Contact the convention cmte. and say you will host it.  You will have more help than you will know what to do with.   Really!!!!!!!

The convention cmte. this year are Jim, (my husband)Bill Mingus, and Jane Day. Mike's wife)

Linda

So, which of you 'Vegas people are going to step up to the plate on this one?

OR, someone in another part of the country?

Hmmmm?

We have to get moving on this!

Just a suggestion -- if someone from Vegas doesn't want to take it on (and it is a really big pain in the rear - or can be) the convention committee can contact someone local for details and do most of it by phone or e-mail.

Bob P did a great job with the first one and he didn't live in Vegas. We had people from 6 countries there (7 if you count CA - never did vote on that one).

T-shirt, door prizes, etc can be shipped directly to the hotel of choice and be there when the convention committee arrives. (Or ship 'em to Bob G's house and he can deliver 'em -- he's gonna kill me for that one!)

But it needs to be done soon so people can start making plans and saving those nickles and dimes to get there.

There is no reason I can fathom why people need to know WHERE the convention is before they can start saving their money.   It's going to cost money no matter where it will be.

Who has offered to host the convention?  No-one.

I agree Linda.  The convention is gonna be SOMEWHERE so start saving now. Heck i would put you guys up at one of our hotels (2) but we don't even have a regional airport, much less an international one. Wink

Hi, I'm back.

Adam is doing much better now that we discovered our doctor TREATS clusters.  She has him on triptins and O2.

Anyway.  I am a professional convention/meeting planner.  I would love to be involved.  I am in Columbia, SC and could manage something in this area.  We have Charleston, too hot in the summer and the rates are high then, same for myrtle beach.  Can get great deals at the beach in January.  I got condos one time for $65 and it included breakfast, lunch, welcoming reception, and breaks.  Asheville is another place I have done lots of stuff. Don't want to go there in the fall, that's the "in" season.  Gatlinberg has been hounding me to do something up there.  So there are lots of choices in my neck of the woods and I would love to be able to meet some of you too.  It would be really good for Adam to meet some CH'ers too.  He is a little shy about meeting new people, but I have a feeling that he would warm right up to this group.  Just let me know if you want me to delve into the details and a location.

Thanks
Mama Weezer

Well......I am still hoping for the west coast. Sure hope someone from Vegas pops up. If we end up having it back here somewhere, Gatlinberg is fantastic all year round (Smokey Mtns.)  I guess the closest airport is Knoxville, Tn.

Come west coasters, rear your heads.

If everyone is dead set on Vegas, I would certainly be happy to work on it.  I have done conventions as far west as Park City, Utah.  I guess I could take on Vegas.  I would need some guidelines as to how many days, dates, aprox. # of people, meeting space needed, do you do any banquets, cocktail parties, even a copy of a previous, successful agenda would be a great help.  I really am glad to take this on.  I have done very large groups all alone.

Perhaps I should give you a sudo resume:

Legislative Aide, SC State Senate
organized, local, state, regional and national meetings
fundraiser for senators and governor candidates
Assn. of SC Workers' Compensation Attorneys
     Lobbyist
     4 Educational programs per year
Convention at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC
Owner
     Event Design Group
     organized meetings, conventions, etc. nationwide.

If you need any references let me know.  I am not trying to be ugly, just trying to let you know that I do know what I am doing and I would love to contribute.

Louise

Seeing how MUCH they need to save (airfares, hotels, etc) and planning time off from work. some people have to do this at the first of the year to get the time off.

Looks like we've got a volunteer....
