Where were you?
Nov 28th, 2008 at 12:07am

OK, a few days ago, I brought up the question of where you were when JFK was shot, and what were you doing.  It got me to thinking, of other world news days, and where we were.

First of all, I have to get this right out front, I forgot where I was, and what I was doing, when Moses came down from the mount, with the Ten Commandments, so don’t ask me.

Here is my remembered list of “BIG” days:

The earliest one, is the day that the U.S. sent the first man into outer space.  At the time, it was a big hoopla, although I was not very impressed with the short flight up, and then right back down.  I was in the fifth grade, with Mrs. StCyr as my teacher.  She did something astronomical, on its own, by bringing in a television set into the class room, so that we could watch it.  I think I was more impressed with that, than the actual flight.

The next event, was of course, Kennedy’s assassination, which we already discussed.

The next event was man landing on the moon.  I was in the Navy, but visiting family friends, in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania.  A tiny town called Toughkennamon, PA.  I can remember going outside, that evening, and looking at the moon, and being totally overwhelmed at the thought that human beings were up there, as I was looking at it.

Next was the tragic explosion of the space shuttle.  I was working for RCA Global Communications, and at a customer’s office, just off rt. 128, in Needham, Ma., in the third floor computer room, working with Sandy, the company’s communications officer.

And the last biggie, was of course, the 9/11 attack.  I had the day off from work, and I was out riding my horse, with my niece and her horse.  We were having a great canter, alongside this field of cotton, when I got the call, on my cell phone, from my partner.  We decided to close all of our stores, and send the employees home, as we had no idea what more was going to happen.

So what were your big “world news day” stories that you can remember?

Chuck

I was in the library at school standing next to a girl whose family was taping the shuttle launch TV coverage for the McCaullife family when the I found out.  It was awful.

As for 9/11, I was in our early childhhood low functioning special education classroom when the nurse came in and we turned on the TV.

Now, if you havent seen the SNL skit about where were you when you found out about JFK.... it is a classic.

You've overstayed your welcome since the day we met but it doesn't seem to matter to you.  No medications are your master, nothing makes you fret, it's a helpless feeling having nothing I can do

Lets see if I can remember them. JFK shooting, I was Albacore fishing. The first man on the Moon, I was in the Marines, South East Asia War Games. Explosion of the Space Shuttle, I was doing gear work up for King Crab at the West Wall of Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle, saw it on the galley TV. 09/11 I was Red King Crab fishing, John Sutton of the F/V Pelican called me on the radio and told me something about it. Watched a satellite feed of it later in the day.
   Nothing important.

The space shuttle disaster: I was a young teenager visiting my brother at the other side of the city I lived back then, and stared in awe at the telly when it aired on the news.

9/11: I was out working all day, and allthough we had a radio we were playing out own music all day and therefor didn't get the news untill I came home and switched on the TV. I didn't leave it untill deep into the night. Again, utter shock and SO SO angry  Angry Angry!!!

Sixth of may 2002 the Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn got assasinated in Utrecht at approxemately 1800 hours. I only heard it at 2000 hours when I came down after a nap.

Second of november 2004: my gf around 1000 hours at my door, telling me someone had killed Theo van Gogh at the streets. Again, utter shock and rage.

These are the days in my nearly 34 years I'll never forget.

Pascal.

C yours and raise you one - (you youngun).... The FIRST space flight -- I was in Chem class and we were LISTENING to it on the RADIO (remember those?). Took up the whole class. We had a man in SPACE - wonder of wonders.

The Cuban Standoff (Bay of Pigs - whatever) when our ships were sitting on the ready waiting for Russia to go home and we didn't know if we were going to be in a nucleur (sp)  war or not. My husband was in the Army and it was a scarey time.

Walk on the moon - sitting in front of the TV watching and waiting. It was awesome... (only Buck Rogers had done anything like that before and that was fantasy in the movies).

9-11 - was listening to Imus in the Morning when the first tower was hit and driving to work when the second one was hit. We didn't do anything at work that day except worry. One of my employees son worked for AA and she couldn't find him and I got paniciky when AF-1 landed in Bossier City (my son was about a mile from the base). After we found our kids we settled down, but it was a horrible day (week- month).

And then I had to worry about Anna Nichole's baby's paternity... The girls at the beauty shop were depending on me for information.... Smiley Smiley Smiley

First American in space? It was suborbital and can't remember the name. I was in 9th grade, I think and we didn't get tv in class. I think I was home for Glenn's orbit though.

I was in Utica, NY on July 20, 1969 watching the moon landing on TV.

I was a real space geek and I was watching CNN or some other cable news channel during the shuttle disaster.

For 9/11, I was late coming to the story and learned of it only after looking for the noon news on Buffalo tv.

Of course for the Cuban missile crisis, it wasn't like today. Aside from JFK's announcement telling us we were in deep, it was confined to Walter Cronkite and the like. I don't remember a special on it but I do seem to remember seeing live pictures of the first Naval encounters.
