I fell for a marketing rip-off!!
Dec 24th, 2008 at 1:12am

I decided it was time to try Melatonin, again.  I was not sure if I had any left (although I should have known that I did) so while I was doing my grocery shopping, I grabbed a bottle of melatonin.  I did not pay close attention to the per pill dosage.  I saw 300, and assumed it was the good stuff.  (We all know what "ASSUME" did!)

Well, I got home, and then REALLY looked at the lable.  It is 300 MCG of melatonin!  That equates to .3 mg!  And we have found that in order for us to get the benefits of it, we need to take 9 mg or more.  That would be
30
freekin pills to get the 9 mg!

What an advertising gimmick!

And the worst of it is, I fell for it!!!

What a dumb shit I am!

I forgot the Latin for it, but remember: Buyer, BEWARE!

Pissed off (at himself) Chuck

As far as I'm concerned, cluster busting has been the best treatment I've tried. No migraines since I started it, and my hits have gotten so much better. Wanna know more?

I found some of that Latin cavity empty too Chuck, so I can jump in bed with you on that one.  I mean...  thought I could use a little potassium supplement.  Bought a bottle that says, potassium gluconate 595 mg.  Get home and turn it around to read -- potassium 99mg, % daily value, 3%.  Big whoop.

Actually, it wasn't a marketing scam!  For people that don't have broken hypomathalamathingies and are experiencing insomnia due to lower melatonin production as a function of age, 0.3mg is the most effective dose to help with insomia.  Smiley

So... it's not a scam.  They're just ripping off the old geezers, Chuck.  Wink

Melatonin treatment for age-related insomnia

IV Zhdanova, RJ Wurtman, MM Regan, JA Taylor, JP Shi, and OU Leclair. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (J Clin Endocrinol Metab) 2001  86:4727-4730

Older individuals frequently experience insomnia, which may be related to a decreased production of melatonin that occurs with aging. This study examined whether physiological doses of melatonin would restore nighttime melatonin levels and improve sleep in older individuals. Over a nine-week period, 30 men and women aged 50 and over (half of whom reported having insomnia) received three dose levels of melatonin (0.1 mg, 0.3 mg, or 3.0 mg) or a placebo half an hour before bedtime. Results showed that melatonin had no effect on sleep efficiency in individuals with normal sleep patterns. In individuals with insomnia, melatonin significantly improved sleep at all three doses, with the greatest effect seen with the 0.3 mg dose. Melatonin administration at all three doses also significantly increased circulating melatonin levels at night. The 3.0 mg dose elevated melatonin levels during the day, resulting in decreased core body temperatures and hypothermia. According to this study, older individuals with insomnia may benefit from a 0.3 mg dose of melatonin taken 30-minutes before going to sleep.

I did the same damn thing, Chuck.  They didn't have my preferred brand, and so I got one that had like a million pills for cheap.
Turns out they are 1mg pills.

I didn't even know they sold 1mg.  Sure beats using a pill cutter, though.
