Pets...

Cursed pets... Can't live with them, can't live without them.

Heading out to the park with my mutts. As I'm getting out of the front gate, Chester takes off after a cat. Seeing him run out into the road, I reach out and grab the extending lead with my left hand.  Smiley

The rope burned through my thick gloves (they are my 'Canada' gloves - good Thinsulate ones) and into my hand. Got 4 nicely burned fingers that are currently throbbing under a bag of frozen peas. Looks like a red hot poker has been laid across my hand.  Cry

Anyone else like to share some darned pet stories to make me feel better?

Well, Nikita (our Sheltie) used to run across the road to sniff by the neighbors, and 2 years ago, when she was a year old, a car drove by and hit her.  I saw it all happen, and had I called her to me, she would have been dead.  Amazingly enough, she only had a bloody nose with no broken bones or internal injuries.

God was watching out for us/her that day!

yeah I got a recent good one...

Zoey, my border collie/aussie shepherd and I always spend a few moments in the morning just loving each other.  I was petting her, lovin' on her.. and that paw SHOOTS UP in the air to touch my face...

and damn if  her fingernail didn't got RIGHT up my nose! Nowhere else, just right up the nose!  Must've hit "just the right spot" cuz my already dry nose started bleeding like crazy!

Ran to the bathroom with my hand cupped under my chin, blood pooling into my palm. It took a 1/2 hour to finally get it to stop... only to start again when I tried to clean up!

So Zoey made me late for work. How does one explain THAT scenario?

I have such wonderful dogs that I couldn't think of anything precosious they have done but within 5 min. I did. Marley and Me is the story of our black lab. We "inherited" him at a year old because my husband's brother couldn't contol him and I didn't want him to go to the pound. I could go on and on about all the naughty things he did but the one that embarrassed me the most was when we were at the beach at Assateague Island in the summer. He was on a long lead and I wasn't paying close attention. He walked over to someones beach blanket and lifted his leg getting the picnic basket and the blanket. He finally settled down about 7 years old and lived to 17 years  old. The next two dogs we got were female. Wink

Deeogee is my handsome 6 year old red Doberman Pinscher.  He was a rescue from The Catskill area of New York and came to me after having 4 owners in 4 months.  Can you say dysfunctional?

I drove from Delaware during a massive rain storm up to Giant's Stadium to pick him up from my friend who drove down from High Falls, NY.  During the slow, rainy, road flooded 4 hour trip home, he chewed through his leash, chased my windshield wipers for 2 hours, gnawed on my arm for the other 2 hours and barked at every car that passed us on The Jersey Turnpike, over the Commodore Barry Bridge and I-95.

For the first week that I had him, he thought it was fun to scare me by jumping into the shower with me. Angry

Hiding his toys in the shower and toilet was also a source of entertainment for him.

A few years ago, we had a big snow storm so the sides of the road in the neighborhood were lined with piles of plowed snow about 3 feet high.  Having a bad case of Cabin Fever, I decided to take Deeogee for a walk.

During this time, he was obsessed with raw carrots and refused to leave the house without taking his carrot......go figure?

As we were walking down the street, he decided that he wanted to climb onto one of the snow piles and then (with the carrot in his mouth) he decided that this was a cool place to take a dump.  Of course at the same time, a line of five cars came down the street.  Must have been an interesting sight for sure. Embarrassed

Last summer, I reenacted a scene from the movie, The Matrix thanks to Deeogee.

My ditzy neighbor who ignores the leash laws let her little speck of a dog run into my back yard.  Deeogee began to bark so I went out to bring him inside house.  I grabbed his cable while standing on my back step.  All was well until Ditzy neighbor's dog ran near me.

Deeogee pulled me while trying to get to the other dog which sent me flying about 3 feet into the air.  I swear it felt like I was suspended off of the ground for hours.  The whole time I heard a little voice in my head saying, "When you hit that concrete it's gonna hurt and it's gonna hurt really, really badly."

I found out that day that I can bounce when hitting concrete from three feet in the air and that liver and rib contusions along with a hairline elbow fracture are not fun.

Dogs.....gotta love 'em.

One day this man I know (  Wink he he) was running the dogs in the fields nearby. Two labs, lots of energy. He would carry this lures (you know for boats) and throw them for the dogs to retrieve. Well here he is, walking along, and all of a sudden there's a rattle snake striking. Completely took him by suprise so he did the only logical thing, jumped back and threw the lures at the snake. Yea, so then the dogs did what they do, and started to chase after them. This "man" I know had to scream his "I mean business" commands to get the dogs to come to him and away from the snake.

Wow - dogs sound painful!

I grew up with a Welsh Terrier - but the only truly stand out story I remember was a big water balloon fight all the neighborhood kids had in our yard.  When we came back to clean up - someone had done it for us.  YAY!  Mom thanked us for cleaning up - ????????  About an hour later we found out who had cleaned everything up - Kyffin had eaten all of them.  Cleaning up THAT mess was a lot worse!

As to Gary and I?  We always wanted a dog, but never had the schedule for it.  And then the cats started adopting us.

The first time this happened, Gary thought it was so hysterical to be able to head into work and say... "the cat ate my homework!"   Grin

Our vision-impaired one-eyed deaf kitty, enjoying her favorite pastime.

Laurie, I love your cat...how adorable.
I have a dog...a mini-dachshund who has embarrased me so many times I wouldn't even know where to start.  The last time was recently she got loose from her leash and I was stopping traffic in the middle of the street and screaming her name in a robe and bare-footed.   Huh  She's going to be 5 yo in April.  She pretty much thinks she owns the world.  LOL

Our move up to Oregon was anything BUT uneventful, however, when we look back on it, one event stands out. Phantom was our 28# deaf and stoopid longhaired, albino cat. Not deaf and mute, as he was definitely the loudest cat anyone has ever heard.......
That said, my daughter and I headed to Oregon several weeks before my husband and son, and we took twe 2 cats as well as our dog, in our car. Early on, we decided to give the cats a mild tranquilizer, just to take the edge off...Dana sat in back ,separating the 2 cats, who wanted to growl at each other the whole way, so Hawkeye, my sweet schmutzu rode in front with me. We split the trip into 2 days, so we would arrive rested in Oregon, so, at the halfway point( REDDING< CA_ LINNNDA!), we stopped for the night. We brought the cats out of their carriers, Hawkeye sautered in on his own steam, and everyone settled in for a nice evening of popcorn and a movie, then a good night's rest.
Morning arrived, and my daughter and I got dressed and headed to the dining room for breakfast. Our plan was to eat, tranq the cats, and put em in their carriers,  load up to finish our trip. Chrissie, our black persian was easy.....loaded in the carrier, no prob, our dog, Hawkeye, was ready for more car time......off he went.........then, to Phantom, the deaf stoopid one.....NOWHERE to be found!!! We tore that room apart, even flipping mattresses off the beds.....pulling the armoire from the wall, I'm so sure Housekeeping thought some really kinky stuff occurred there.......my daughter left the room to look around the area. This was your typical motel........but on a fairly large piece of property...she ran the entire property, pool area(and equipment room), all open doors, then pressed Housekeeping to let her open EVERY vacant room..she even looked around the(OMG! Shocked) street, in abject fear that she'd find him, flat as a pancake, a victim of a car.I got some tuna..and we even called for this deaf cat......we were devastated!! Sobbing, I called Gil, still in CA, to tell him we had somewhow managed to lose one of HIS cats!!! Shocked  We decided, since it was now noon and 109 degrees out, IF Phantom were ok, he was resting someplace cool, and he wasn't coming out till sundown. We extended our stay for another night, and, exhausted now, went back to our room to try and rest......we sobbed on our beds for a long time, wracked our brains as to where he might be and were simply overall devastated., emotionally drained.....we finally quieted down. There was no movement in the room............suddenly, from below us somewhere........MEOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
WW! (Phantom was LOUD!)
We flew off our beds, pulled the mattresses off the box springs, then the box springs off the platforms....... Phantom had found a nice lil hammock...the fabric under the box springs had ripped, so he let himself in there and was sleeping using the sagging fabric like a hammock............Dana picked him up out of his cozy spot and took a "Victory Lap" all around the motel property, holding Phantom over her head so everyone could see him.....we tranq'd him, popped him in his carrier, and made it into Portland at 3am..........
all the time wondering.........
If someone had not booked their one n only "pet welcome" room for another week or so..................well, nevermind..... just.EUUUUUUUUUUUUW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phantom is gone now......he had a stroke just last year at 19 yrs of age.....he lived a long, loud life, and I miss him.......but he was always good for a story! He's also the cat in my flaming, flying cat story!!

Em,

I'm so sorry about that!

My guinea pigs have been behaving nicely in comparison.

Olivia just escaped twice when I was carrying her to her cage outdoors. She jumped from my lap and ran! She was just a baby guinea pig then and I panicked. Luckily, so did she, and she remained on her spot and I caught her easily at the first time. On the second, however, I had to ask my best friend to help me, because Olivia ran to the bush next to our gardens. So my friend stayed on her side of the garden and I stayed at mine and caught Olivia.

Eetu and Kasper have tried to bite me a few times and one of them liked my purple blouse so much that bit several holes into it!

Cathi, I can't imagine the panic!  But from those I've met, it seems to me that deaf cats are always the loudest.   Grin  In this case - thank goodness!

Em - I hope you're healing up quickly!
