Marc, I am enjoying your pics as well.

I have a question...please keep in mind that I am not a photographer and do not know the correct jargon to ask the following...is this picture one of the HDR pics whereby you take a digital pic and then recreate it one F stop above and another F stop below and them super impose the three of them to create the vivid reality?...or is this pic just "as taken"?

Neat picture and like Linda, I wonder about the narrow gauge. Good stuff.

The "narrow gauge" are in fact guard rails. If a car derails it is (hopefully) caught by these rails and doesn't swing out and damage the bridge structure.

Paul,

Yes, it's an HDR image. (High Dynamic Range)  But I use a fixed f stop and vary the shutter speed and shoot 3 to 7 images of the same scene at vastly different exposures. Then I blend them together. The image at the top of this thread is 4 frames blended together.

The image below is one of the four frames used to make the final image.

I used to do something similar with film by actually stacking slides on top of each other and shooting a copy of that composite. The important thing to remember is that you have to have a solid image to start with. (A pig is still a pig, even with lipstick)

Not long ago, I avoided digital processing techniques like HDR because most of my stuff was intended for magazine publication. Now I realize that I like to play with more fanciful imagery  Smiley

Thanks for the explanation Marc. This HDR stuff really catches my eye these days and i cannot quite figure out what it is about them...the depth of detail and vibrancy of colour I guess...a new visual dimension.

Nice work!

It would never even occur to me to even try to  take a picture like that.  I have no artistic presence at all.    Thank you for sharing.  It is really beautiful!

Marc, when you retire from your day job I can so totally see you making a great retirement living in selling your photographs as well as maybe teaching it.   Wink
