Ok - What Is A "Demand Valve"? (Read 845 times)

Jan 11^th, 2009 at 3:07am Was just filling out a CH survey and it asked if I use a demand valve. Not sure what that is. How much different is that from a regulator and what are the benefits/ drawbacks?

It's like what scuba divers use. When you inhale it opens up and lets air out. I use one, it's an old paramedic style push button/demand regulator. It works better for me because of how I use my 02. I exhale completely, then draw in as deep a breath as I can hold, and hold it for up to 45 seconds, then exhale, draw a few short breaths and a deep one I hold again.

A standard flow regulator would waste 02 for me as it would continue to run while I'm holding my breath! Using my technique I can abort with as little as 3-400 pounds out of an E-tank.

Not at all. In fact, quite perfect explanation, and actually answered more than just that one question. I had considered going to a scuba store to see how much a scuba mouthpiece would run, since it seems to not waste o2 on divers. The non-rebreather on my M tank is crap, and right now I just suck out of the tube on my portable tanks.

Now that I know it helps to conserve o2 and seems more effective, I'll have to look for one online.
