WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama's choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed to senators Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation. Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his nomination in November, an Obama transition official said. The unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama's transition team while investigating Geithner's background, the official said. The transition official requested anonymity because the source was not authorized to discuss Geithner's situation.

After a 2006 Internal Revenue Service audit identified the lapse on his 2003 and 2004 tax returns, Mr. Geithner paid tax and interest of $17,230 and the I.R.S. waived penalties, according to the transition.

When is the last time they waived anything for us?

A tax cheat enforcing the tax code?........Man, is this real life?

While some Democrats suggested the issues would ultimately be seen as innocent mistakes or technicalities, the controversy is a big embarrassment for a man in line to head the department with responsibility for enforcing the tax code.

An innocent mistake?.....he is or was the fucking president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York!

Don't worry about a little Tax mishap. He was very busy at the time.

He'll handle our finances alright Jonny...after all he's President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

He'll make sure banks have money...our money...to loan it back to us...so the banks can make more money.

Since 2003, Geithner has been president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He testified to Congress in March that he could not explain what precipitated the financial instability we're in now.

"What produced this is a very complicated mix of factors, he said. "I don't think anybody understands it yet."

Maybe he should have just taken the Fifth. Because he is intimately involved with the criminally negligent bank bailouts.

"His easy terms protected shareholders and executives but demanded almost nothing from the failing banks for the public," William Greider noted in The Nation. "Worst of all, the deals did not work. They failed to stabilize much of anything and still putting Wall Street preservation ahead of the National Interest. Where is the evidence that we can expect a different approach if Geithner is in charge? Or that he understands the true dimension of the crisis?"
