Low dosage O2 during night as a preventative?
Jan 24th, 2009 at 7:16pm

This site and this forum have been a huge help for me. Thanks all of you. I am a 54 year old male. I have been having episodic CH since my late teens. I am two weeks into what will likely be about five weeks of no fun. I am on a three year cycle. Thanks to you all I wrangled O2 out of my doc for the first time this time around and I am a believer!! She prescribed me a couple of cute little E tanks, an 8 LPM regulator and a cannula. This actually works for me but I was so jazzed I immediately went on ebay and got a bad-ass regulator, I bought an Optimask and I rented a 125 cu-ft welders O2 tank. Now I smack that beast good. I have a bubbler coming.

I am taking Topamax and so far I cannot say it is doing anything good or bad. I will be patient. My general routine these days is that I wake up several times during the night while dreaming with a K3-4. I grab the O2 immediately and can almost always knock it down in 10-20 mins.

My question is this - would wearing the cannula and running 1-2 LPM of O2 while sleeping act as a preventative? I am almost certain I have no sleep apnea. My wife reports that I do not snore and that I sleep just fine. I read about trying this on this board at one time but for the life of me I cannot find it now.

That idea has been tossed around several times, haven't seen any research in that regard and haven't heard of anyone having success with avoiding hits that way.

Dang glad the 02's rocking it for you. Great feeling to not face him unarmed anymore huh? Take care.

"Somebody had to say it" is usually a piss poor excuse to be mean.

I DO have sleep apnea, and have a CPAP machine to use at night.  At one point, I jury rigged an oxygen hose to it, so that it was sending a low level of oxygen through the night.  I tried several different flow rates over a series of nights.  I never noticed any improvement in my night time hits.  Not in number, nor intensity.

BUT, as they say, YMMV ...

CAUTION:  Do NOT smoke when using or around oxygen.  Oxygen can permeate your clothing or bedding.  Wait, before lighting cigarette or flame.

Keep fire extinguisher available, and charged.
