WTH?
Jan 25th, 2009 at 10:10am

Been on the treadmill everyday for 1 1/2 weeks now walking 3.5 MPH for 1 hour a day and really working up a good sweat. I'm trying to get back into weight lifting shape. Watching what I eat and the portions and I GAINED 2.5 lbs? What the hell is going on? Maybe gaining muscle is all I can come up with. I feel really good and actually do this before I go to work and have a lot of energy all day.

Any personal trainers or CH's out there who have experienced this that can shed some light on this weight gain?

Soon to be svelte Jimmers

From my experience, and correct me if I'm wrong which I'm sure someone will, in the first week or 2 of working out your muscles end up holding onto water before you get into a routine and then it should release it.

Did a little research and yes, you can retain water weight in your muscles.  I don't quite understand *trying to get back into weight lifting shape*.  Why not go ahead and start with some light lifting in combo with the treadmill?  You might want to think about mixing the treadmill up a bit, say, go 3.5 mph for a bit, then kick it up to 4-4.5 mph. for about 5 minutes and then back down to 3.5 for a bit, etc.  Your body tends to get used to something if you do it for any amt. of time and you lose the benefit of the exercize.

What's your water intake?

When I exercised regularly (which was way too long ago), I found I didn't lose weight right away.  My clothes fit better and I dropped a size or two, but the weight loss was no more than a couple of pounds. (Guess one has to be satisfied with doing the right thing for the first few months . . . )

When I stopped exercising abruptly (to take full time care of my dad), I lost 28 pounds in three months. The clothes didn't fit as well and eventually that weight came back because I didn't get back to regular exercise.  (And as an aside . . .the Germans have a word for the weight you gain during grieving - Kummerspeck - which hysterically translates to GRIEF BACON!)

Delta,

My doc told me to not start lifting weights quite yet. It's a BP thing and she wants me to work into it slowly at first. 4.5 MPH? That's running speed. The old softball injured bad knees wouldn't take it. 3.5 is fine for me Cool

Jimmers,

I do remember hearing that weighing yourself straight after exercise shows weight gain because your muscles are storing the water. In the first 6 weeks, apparently it's better to measure your waist, arms, thighs and see if they are reducing in size.

I couldn't face looking at my thigh measurements!!

muscle weighs more that fat

so, you can gain weight but lose inches.  That's a good thing.

I had no idea what a "Pabst habit" might be, so I went and Goggled it and now I know, and I call myself a beer drinker, huh! Huh. Here is a cool old ad for it. Smiley

Took me about 3 weeks to shed a couple pounds. It seems easier after that for a few more but then I got stuck. There seems a certain level of flab that wants to remain.
