Amazing Machine...

It is called the "Wood Chopper From Hell"!!!
I hate to see our forests "clear cut" like this but am pretty impressed by this piece of equipment. Oh well, I guess this is progress. Roll Eyes

Sorry Barry. Sad

Eli LOVES Dr. Suess, and we have a ton of them which get repeated rounds of bedtime books.

The Lorax is such a sad book, probably one of the most disturbing I've ever read of Dr. Suess.

S'ok though, I think kids learn a great deal from it, especially the sense of responsibility at the end.  I think climate change is real, not sure about the whole man made thing tho as the earth has it's cycles, but trees are a wonderful resource if they're managed properly. Smiley

Now as for that machine, while it IS impressive, it's mighty freakin scary!  Can you imagine a whole fleet of them?  *shudder*

I understand that some forests are man made to grow trees for productivity such as paper and that is why this machine was made to clear cut at a very fast rate.

But I also have seen the other side of development within site of my home where these machines went in and completely cleared many hectors of forest and it was left like that, totally stripped and barren. It saddens me every time I go by it.

When it happened again beside our Wally World and Home Deposit ( I hate big box stores) our town passed a bylaw to prevent this from happening again, so that say's it was recognized as a problem for them to do this bylaw.

Just a note that our community is a very attractive place with our lakes and forests, quite scenic and many celebrities have cottages here, so when our land gets stripped like it did it really pissed off the majority of locals and tourists.

Sorry for the rant, but I hate to see our special place here in Muskoka starting to look like a mini city, that's all.  Angry

I had my land selectively harvested 1-1/2 years ago and they used the exact same machine. It did not strip the bark though. At first I was in shock when I saw the land, but it had to be done because the woods was very old. All of this was done with the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources and a plan that they designed for our acreage. Made some money, helped the land and the critters LOVE it because of all of the new growth. This, combined with the food plots that we plant and maintain has really made some good habitat for the deer and turkeys.

It doesn't take them long with a machine like that one. It looked to me that those logs might go for making furniture of something. If it was for pulp, they would have left the bark on.

Forest Management is so very important. I really am pleased to hear how your land was taken care of. That is the way it should be done in my opinion. Smiley

It still bites me when I see the stripped land up the road from me, nobody gave a shit about the wildlife or any new growth of trees or vegetation. It was done in the spring so many animals have newborns. Angry

Maybe we will get another "SuperStore" for our community on this land.  Tongue

New twist to this clear-cutting issue in our area. It appears the local landowners are not very happy about being told what they can or cannot do with their own land as far as cutting their OWN trees.

The proposal includes landowners having to pay for permits to remove even a single tree. This is all because of the commercial clear-cut that happened here in two separate area's of our town.

Here's the twist:
We rely on tourism big time and snowmobiling is huge here, as a few of the trail systems are the most traveled of any in the province of Ontario.
Landowners are getting together and threatening to close off their property's to the sledders. Many travel here from all over including the States and will be some pissed when they get here and find out that the trails are closed.

Bottom line, it is NOT the local landowner who is destroying the precious forests here, it is the big developers who are doing it. It has been two years since the area up the road was cleared and there it sits, barren.

Sorry I go on with this, but this is just another example of being told what you can or cannot do with your own land. I am trying to find some more info on this but it is being kept pretty much "HUSH" on this matter. Angry

Sorry for the rant. Sad
