President's first TV interview
Jan 27th, 2009 at 11:01am

What do you all think about him choosing to air his first TV interview on an Arab network?  Smart or not?

I thought it was Super Bowl pre-game

NBC-TV says it has landed the "first television interview from the White House" with President Obama since Inauguration Day, and that it will be on the air during the pre-game show before Sunday's Super Bowl.

According to a press release sent to reporters a short time ago:

NBC News' Matt Lauer will sit down with President Barack Obama for a live interview. ... The interview will be the president's first television interview from the White House since his inauguration. The live interview will air Sunday, February 1 during NBC's Super Bowl Pre-Game. More of the interview will air Monday, February 2 on NBC News' Today.

NBC Sports' coverage of the Super Bowl begins at Noon ET,

Obama gives first TV interview to Arabic network

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama gave his first formal television interview as president to an Arabic cable TV network, telling Al-Arabiya that when it comes to Middle East matters "all too often the United States starts by dictating."

Obama taped the interview with the Dubai-based network Monday as his envoy to the Middle East, former Sen. George J. Mitchell, set out for an eight-day trip to the region and elsewhere. The interview complemented the new administration's first efforts to reach out to Arab leaders in the region, who have been wary at best of U.S. efforts to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Obama said he felt it important to "get engaged right away" in the Mideast and had directed Mitchell to talk to "all the major parties involved." His administration would craft an approach after that, he said in the interview.

"What I told him is start by listening, because all too often the United States starts by dictating," Obama told the interviewer.

The president reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel as an ally, and to its right to defend itself. But he suggested that Israel has hard choices to make and that his administration would press harder for it to do so.

"We cannot tell either the Israelis or the Palestinians what's best for them. They're going to have to make some decisions. But I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people," he said.

Obama added: "There are Israelis who recognize that it is important to achieve peace. They will be willing to make sacrifices if the time is appropriate and if there is serious partnership on the other side."

Obama stopped short of giving a timetable, but he said he is certain progress can be made.

Bit of an info discrepancy.

Obama chose Al Arabiya, an Arabic-language news channel based in Dubai, for his first formal television interview in the White House.

NBC-TV says it has landed the "first television interview from the White House".

I guess "in" the White House and "from" the White House mean different things.     Smiley

In the past few weeks, all the conservatives around me have complained about the number of press conferences, TV addresses, radio addresses and miscellaneous sound bites originating from President Obama.  Now that he talks to someone else instead of the American public, there is outrage that he gave his press-conference virginity to another!. LMFAO!!  His first international trip will be to Canada - the fact that he didn't choose the US for that is more proof that he puts America last.  Cheesy

I wonder if NBC will further advertise the interview billed as a "first interview".

I'm posting to you FROM IN my house, Mel.   Smiley

I guess the stipulation would be that the NBC News interview will be the first "live" interview as opposed to the Al-Arabiya taped one...
even though they both claim to have the first television interview.

Thanks, Steve.  Right on top of things.

They replaced first with live interview.  It's all good.

*Sorry, Steve.  I see NBC still has first in there, but live, as you said.  Completely missed it, it wasn't highlighted, get a black light!     Smiley

It was brilliant stagecraft. This is the kind of thing that won the election for him.
