Wedding help required
Jan 28th, 2009 at 8:33am

Hello,

I need some help! I have to choose a biblical reading for my wedding and I'm just not sure what to have. I don't want to have the usual Corinthians reading (Love is patient). I've heard it at a dozen weddings and know people who chose it because of it's minimal references to religion. Hence, I've been a bit put off it.

I know there are folks here who'll be able to help me!!
PLEASE!
My other reading is 'The Art of a Good Marriage' by WA Peterson.

I know... I know... the following is NOT from the bible...

But it may be useful.

Kahil Gibran an excerpt from The Prophet: on Marriage.

“You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.

Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness, and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together, yet not too near together: for the pillars of the temple stand apart, and the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

with warm regards,
Ton

Tony,

I LOVE that! I may run it past him and see what he thinks. He did specifically say biblical though...

I'll let you know what he says.

Pat - thanks for the site. I'm going to have a look through the readings there later on!

xx

What about from Ruth?

I'll never leave you or forsake you. Where you go, I will go, where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.  Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me severely if anything but death  separates you and me.

That gave me shivers.

Does the reading have to be Biblical because you are getting married in a church or because you want a Biblical reading?

The above was just googled.  I can try and find something for you if you clarify what you might be looking for.

Thanks Eric,

I've been googling them for about an hour and get the same ones. I want something that sounds loving and wedding-like, but not overly lecture-like (if that makes sense). I like Colossians Ch 3:

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

And as far as I can see, I have to have a bible reading. I told the vicar I'd chosen one and he said I had to have a bible reading. I've emailed him about Tony's post, so we'll see if he lets us have that.

That was read at a very good friend of mines wedding by her sister.  I liked it, but it was read after the pastor read something that contradicted almost everything in it.  Shocked

Em,

I'm so glad that Tony already posted my favourite text from Kahlil Gibran. When my best friend was planning her wedding, I sent that to her when she was looking for suitable readings.

Anything else I could do to help...?
