octuplets
Jan 30th, 2009 at 9:43am

The mother of a woman who gave birth on Monday to octuplets said her daughter already has six children at home and was undergoing fertility treatment.
The six older siblings range from ages 7 to 2

The doctor implanted 8 embryos.
Am I wrong to say 'wtf is wrong with her'?

Not uncommon to implant lots of embryos.  Sometimes only 1 makes it to term.

We have a friend who already had 5 children and wanted another.  She did in-vitro again (they implanted 3 embryos) and now she has 8 children.

Fertility is a weird thing.

Im sorry but having 8 newborn s with 6 other kids when your husband is heading back to Iraq sounds very foolish.

Call me
CRAZY
, but 2 was enough for me and that was a long time ago.  14 children and the other 6 aren't even old enough to help.  She has to have many screws loose.  The house didn't even look big enough for the people already there.  I guess they will have to have ship sleeping schedules around the clock.

Some folks like having lots and lots of babies. Not many, but some. All the power to them.

But one would think they'd want to have the proper support networks in place BEFORE potentially increasing the size of their passel from 6 to 14. And dad leaving home just in time for the big event sounds less than brilliant to me.

Playing devil's advocate here:

The media and viewer's of so-called "news" programs blasted this woman as "irresponsible" for having 8 more babies ... HOWEVER...

When a woman has an unwanted pregnancy ended, and some do this over and over, we are all told to hush- its her choice. Reproductive rights

So who are we to tell this woman that she is being irresponsible for WANTING baby(s)?  Isn't giving birth a CHOICE too?

off my soapbox now.

This is a tough one for me.  We wanted a large family and have one ... though we did it one kid at a time over 19 years.

Here's the rub ... I can't see any ethical Dr implanting 8 embryos in a womb that has already produced 6 other full term babies.  It just doesn't sound right.

If the oldest is 7, how many of her previous kids were multiples?  The math just doesn't work.  Are they all from a test tube?

There may be something wrong with her for wanting that many.  Hell there might be something wrong with me.  I'm not going to pass judgement on her while living in my own glass house.

But for sure that Dr should have his license revoked.

You wrote what I have been thinking Dennis.  Something about this doesn't seem right.

I know plenty of people who have gone to fertility specialists to concieve, but a woman who already has 6 babies?  Implanting 8 embryos seems excessive.

I thought having 7 kids was a challege.  Those babies will be in the hospital for 2 months until they are able to come home.  I sure hope that is enough time for her to get some help.  She's going to need it. There is no way one person can do this alone.

It gets better...
(CBS) CBS News has learned that the family of the octuplets born this week outside Los Angeles filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.

Then how in the world did they pay for in-vitro fertilization?

From the article:
The
grandfather
, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man.

Kauffman reported Thursday, and the octuplets' maternal grandmother now confirms to the Los Angeles Times, that the babies' mother already had six young children.  And a family acquaintance had told Kauffman that two of the six other kids are twins, and the six range in age from about two to about seven.

There was some other mention later on in the article about taking fertility drugs "on her own" and coming into the clinic that treated her already 3 months pregnant.  (Is there a black market for fertility drugs?  I can't even get my allergy medicine refilled without a doctor's scrip and people can get FERTILITY drugs??)

Also - there is no mention of a FATHER in the article.

Curiouser and curiouser . . . .

It's not so much that I am against large families, my mother was 1 of 18.  But I think I remember some news cast saying that she didn't know who the father is.  And when you already have 6 and have no place to live, I don't know, Just not responsible.

I think you will know the next time your insurer denies your request for CH meds.

That is my gripe.  These people who were already apparently living beyond their means are still shooting kids into the world... this time by the truckload.

Heh heh... if it was in-vitro I would guess it is the guy who jerked-off into the cup.

But as MW pointed out some sources are saying it was through fertility drugs... in which case it could have been anyone.

Wow, my wife nailed this one last night.  Her speculation was black market fertility drugs gone bad.  I didn't believe her.

CBS News covered the story this morning and interviewed a fertilty doctor. The question was brought up how a fertility physician could even justify this behavior. He said most clinics don't have a policy but a psychiatric work up is done  (or should be) on each of the patients. Her family background should have exempted her from any intervention. His conclusion is that this is not a miracle but a medical misfortune that will make people look infavorable at fertility counseling and assistance. The medical bills are just the beginning where financial assistance will need to occur.
