Moon and star in line..
Jan 30th, 2009 at 7:35pm

Looks cool but I cannot get a pic of it. This is the 2nd night in a row the slice of the mood has a star right below it. I am looking to the west.

Anybody else seeing this tonight? Huh

Too cloudy here to see it, but many times there are stars in line with the moon, depending on the night.

Some, see these happeneings as signs and omens, and others just pass them by as usual things.

If this touches you at some level, and you have a particular desire , it's said it's a good time to focus that wish on this, and so long as the utcome would harm no one, your wish could manifest.

Take from this what you will, and leave the rest... Wink

Thank you Pegg, that was nice. I suspect the star might be the international space station, but not sure.

It is the brightest star in the sky when it is clear out.

I don't believe the space station would be in the same spot for more than a single night.  The mileage from earth is too close to keep it in the same spot for more than a single night.  Orbit is totaly different.

I'm pretty sure it's Venus.

Is there a Moon too this year? I haven't seen a star, Moon nor Sun this year, only fog, fog, fog and high fog. In fact, I'm even not sure if the neighbor's house is still standing.

But I fired up my astronomy program and it shows that for people living in better weather than I Venus should be seen near the Moon. With some field glasses you could see it has a similar crescent-shape as the Moon. With a telescope you could even find Uranus nearby.

One thing I've noticed about gazing at the heavens with the naked eye - the two most visible planets are Venus and Mars. Mars is smaller, but has a definitely warm, orangish cast to it. Venus, on the other hand, is brighter (sometimes the brightest "star" in the sky) and has a very cold, bluish look to it.

If that makes any sense.

Chuck, I'll save you the trouble. Heh, heh - he said naked.

Makes perfect sense as this star is brighter and has the cold, bluish look to it. Both moon and star dropping out of sight now, bummer. Tongue

It's clear as can be here and the moon and Venus are spectacular.

Looks like the moon dripped out a tiny point of light.

Which would make it at it's closest and brightest reflecting point.

That spaceweather.com site has proved invaluable in more ways than I can say.  I've seen some really cool things in the sky just by checking in there once in awhile.

I highly suggest bookmarking it and checking it occasionally.

The spacestation is not stationary in the sky.  It actually looks like a high altitude jet crossing the heavens.  Usually only takes a minute or two to travel out of sight.

[size=12]What are stars? Haven't seen anything of the heavens here in a month.

Good stargazers here.

Were getting the same thing here in Oz.
About a month ago we also got what we called a smiley face when Venus, Jupiter & the Moon where close.
Here's a pic & the link to an article about it, I don’t know if it was seen up your way.
I didnt have my new camera then with the telephoto lens but would have loved to get a shot for myself

Cheers
Barry

Got a good view of the space station passing overhead yesterday evening.  Managed to get Ellen and EJ outside in time to see it.  It moves pretty fast across the sky.

The best part was when I told them to "watch this--it'll disappear now"-- just before it faded from sight when it entered the earth's shadow.

Best,

George
