Everyone needs to read the "CH.com Standard of Conduct" post at the top of the page.

You can post your comments on the subject here in this thread...

Thanks Deej.  I'd been saving your original comments to go by (22Nov08) and found no problem.  Other than personal attacks, is there any way to clarify a bit the emboldened portion, since it sits aside and apart from personal attacks?

Quote:
I've read all of your posts, and I'm not sure how I'm going to handle this just yet.  Obviously, self-policing doesn't work.  As for now, here are the changes that will be made:

1)  I will invite several people on this board to be Global Moderators.  Global Moderators will have limited privileges but will have the ability to lock and/or hide threads that get out of hand or to stop any personal attacks.  They will not have the ability to edit or delete profiles, but I will expect them to notify me if someone has crossed the line.  I will share my instructions to GM's with the board when I complete the list.

2)  NO ONE will call someone a "TROLL" unless I have so deemed their profile to "troll status".

Simple enough?

That is all for now...

DJ

It seems I've had a quite boring problem without your help here.

Personally, those 2 words say it all IMO.  If everyone acts with integrity and respect, then no one needs worry about any consequences - from DJ or any other avenue.

Saying something cruel, vicious or mean, or calling someone names, then precluding it with "all due respect" is not behaving with integrity IMO.

I personally don't see how that much has changed with the site;  yes DJ added moderators, something that for years he would not do because he values the ability of everyone to speak their opinion;  In the past people have suffered consequences for personal attacks - that has been in place for many years.  Now it's 'official' and in black and white with a 'staff' to help DJ and Steph follow the many many posts here so they can actually enjoy each other and their family.  I don't see how that's a negative thing.

Just my  Smiley worth.

I'll be glad to see the direct attacks on people stop, and hope that the indirect, mean-spirited, snide, and downright shitty comments stop too.

Regardless, thanks for the clarification on the conduct DJ. I'm glad to know that everyone will be held to the same standard and noone can say they didn't know.

Sweet... we've got rules.  Smiley

Seems that respect is the key...

Here's a list of rules that I found online that reinforces everything DJ has set in motion... debating within the guidelines of being respectful.

Quote:

     1. Avoid the use of Never.
     2. Avoid the use of Always.
     3. Refrain from saying you are wrong.
4.You can say your idea is mistaken.
     5. Don't disagree with obvious truths.
     6. Attack the idea not the person.
     7. Use many rather than most.
     8. Avoid exaggeration.
     9. Use some rather than many.
     10. The use of often allows for exceptions.
     11. Quote sources and numbers.
       12. The use of generally allows for exceptions.
     13. If it is just an opinion, admit it.
     14. Do not present opinion as facts.
     15. Be courteous when disagreeing.
     16. Stress the positive.
     17. You do not need to win every battle to win      the war.
     18. Concede minor or trivial points.
     19. Avoid bickering, quarreling, and wrangling.
     20. Don't win a debate and lose a friend.
     21. Keep your perspective - You're just debating.

with warm regards,
Tony

When in Rome.......and THIS is Rome.........
DJ and Steph live their lives by the Golden Rule..........."do unto others as you would have done to you"......I've seen them express anger and frustration, but they have NEVER attacked another human being! Everyone here is entitled to their OWN opinion, and we can always respect that opinion, and still not agree. Do YOU like to be attacked? Called names? Verbally threatened? I doubt it.......and THAT's all I see The Deejs calling out!
I'm grateful there are some behaviors here that have been banned.
I'm grateful there are people who have agreed to moderate.
I'm only sorry there are people in this world who never learned the Golden Rule.
If I remember that rule, I need never worry about being locked or kicked off this site, and I am ONLY responsible for ME......
Thank you, DJ and Steph, for keeping this site open.
Thank you Moderators for helping to make that possible.
Kumbaya,
Cathi

Moved it here from another spot, because I should have paid attention...I am glad that DJ did what was inevitable.  Times change but people don't (as is human nature).  It used to take personal, intrusive contact to DJ to *POOF* an ugly thread or post - it wasn't pretty.

I'm not surprised that there will be resistance to change, but I think it's for the better. With the awareness about CH growing, the community will naturally grow larger (minus the trolls and snake-oil salespeople).

So maybe I'm being redundant, but there are so many people who could use the interaction here, and not necessarily newbies, who are in dire straits, and don't have that armor that some people have built over time as active posters.  Of course there are always the pot-stirrers instigating but I'm sure that will fall into some category.

This is a good thing:
DJ wrote on Feb 2nd, 2009 at 11:09pm:
Personal attacks or threats against other board members will NOT be tolerated. Racist, sexist, Anti-Semitic remarks, or hate speech will not be allowed. Calling a member 'troll' or using 'troll' or similar emoticons is considered a personal attack.  Abuse of the Private Message (PM) privileges, harassment, stalking, etc... will not be tolerated.

I know I may not be of much support lately - but hopefully, the people who know best - can continue to share what they know with the new folks who come in here without one iota of knowledge about CH, perpetuating what DJ started years ago.

Congratulations Deej & Stephanie for starting the transition - I'm sure there will be growing pains - great job!

Looks good to me!

Also, what Tony said.

Quote:
19. Avoid bickering, quarreling, and wrangling.

The thing that comes to mind here is don't quote a post out of context. Don't quote 3 or 4 words, quote the whole sentence, then make your point.  Wink

ETA, Tony's post should be stickied. Lot's of good reminders.

Deej, I know how painful it has been for you to have to do this.  BUT, it is worth cleaning up the site.  This site is VERY valuable to MANY people, newbies as well as old timers.

What you have done, with the moderators and the clear cut rules, will hopefully keep newbies from being run off.  I know I have been guilty, on occasion of jumping on suspected newbies.  Your requests, no your demands, are extremely reasonable, and well within the ability of everyone here.

What bothers me, is the negative reaction that I have seen on here.  The site is still the same, with minor improvements.  There are some that have threatened, or have left the site, because of this "It isn't the same place anymore" attitude.  Well, even though I really like some of them, I say good riddance, if you cannot see the advantages to the changes!

You feel you have to leave over this?  So sorry you feel that way.  You will be missed.  Have a nice life!

Deej, you did the right thing.  I am behind you 100%.  Keep up the good work!

Chuck

You can ignore my question, I see it was a passing thought that didn't make it to the new rules, uncitable now therefore irrelevant.

I have a couple of quick questions that I'm wondering about.

Does the 3 strikes and your out rule go into effect today?

Also wondering if anyone is going to be going through posts from the past and taking action?

Just curious.

So basically the rules are now asking for posters to show common courtesy to others?

Seems simple enough.

If, by asking about the 3-strikes rule going into effect today you are trying to find out about Jonny, I'll take that up with Jonny.  If not, the answer is yes.

No, no one will be going through old posts.

I know you said I didn't need to answer your question Kevin, but I think it is relevant.

The answer to your original question is "yes".  I can clarify by using four words.  Respect and common courtesy.

It really is that simple!
