Tom Daschle...
Feb 3rd, 2009 at 2:15pm

...withdraws his name as nominee for Sec. of HHS due to tax non-payment problems. Earlier, Nancy Killefer withdrew her name to become the first chief performance officer for the federal government due to tax non-payment problems.

But last week, the US Senate - by a vote of 60-34 - confirmed Timothy Geithner as Secretary of the Treasury, despite his "elephant in the room" tax non-payment problems.

The IRS falls under the jurisdiction of the Dept. of the Treasury. Now we all have a tax dodger telling us we have to pay our taxes. Has the entire world gone mad?

Brew, even though I don't agree with all of his policies, I cannot tell you how proud I was of Russ Feingold being one of 3 to vote Nay on Geithner's appointment.

Every once in awhile Russ surprises me.

What I cannot believe is the 60 Yay votes Geithner got. Every one of these people (Kohl included) should be asked what justified a vote in favor of a tax evader to oversee the IRS. Every single one of them.

Well at least only half of my Congresional delegation voted Yea.  Of course the only reason it was both of them is because Kennedy wasn't there to vote.

I may be mistaken in my view on this, but can't you make every one of those elected representatives answer that very question?  Or at the very least have every body writing to ask them?

I'm not allowed to participate in the process until they stop moving back our date for naturalization, but I was under the impression that every citizen could write their representatives and ask for the reason on any vote they made...

It's one thing to see that go through, it's another if the people sit back and don't do whatever they actively can to make a statement in regards to their representatives votes with letters and demands for accountability.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken in my understanding of this.

The obvious answer is yes, of course citizens can demand answers to this and other questions of their representatives.

It would be nice if we had some honest-to-God journalists who might ask the questions for us in front of a camera. But real journalism is dead. They are ALL in the tank.

The only justice in this is that Daschle had to pay the $128,000 in unpaid taxes (plus penalties) AND he didn't get the job.

No wonder he was in tears while talking to Andrea Mitchell.

Poor guy had to pay his taxes AND didn't get the job.  Cry me a friggin' river.

We should start a movement to have every single member of congress and every cabinet member get audited by the IRS *AS STANDARD POLICY*, every year.  And there should be no special deals cut for any one of them.  If those a-holes want to have the power to pass laws to rule us, they should have to follow those laws.

That would end a lot of this crap.

Agreed. Why should they get by without paying their taxes?

Washington, along with our "servant" politicians, is bankrupt in every way. The forth rail, The Media, has its own agenda and it's as divided as are the American public. The politicians have mutually promoted this division in order to shed the blame on the other Party when conveniently necessary. They have us just where they need us, the divided American citizens.

Did anyone ever to think that if we ever united as one, we may get these turds to act as responsible leaders? I say boo to the divisiveness. Lets join together and run these jackasses out of office.

This fellow, Mr. Daschel, has, (along with other countless ex-politicians) peddled his influence to the highest bidder and we continue to do nothing about it. They get away with it because they can.  George Washington would hang these creeps in short order as traitors to the Public good.

We are to blame. We need to act beyond just sitting back and complaining. Get involved in any way.  The internet has made it possible way beyond what our Founders ever dreamed of.

Act now. They are about to spend a trillion borrowed dollars.

You know, if you're gonna collect taxes, you're supposed to pay the damn things. Daschle is really disappointing as he is incredibly talented for the HHS position.

Except that he's a g** d***** crook. Which kind of negates the talent thing. Same with Geithner, except I don't know that there's anything that can be done about it now - except tell the senators on the "Yay" list that they won't be getting your vote when they're up for reelection.

Rep. Jim Cooper, a conservative Democrat from Tennessee, told a liberal radio network on Monday that the Obama White House encouraged him to defy House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the $819 billion economic stimulus bill.

"Well, I probably shouldn't tell you this, but I actually got some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for what I'm doing," said Cooper, one of only 11 Democrats to vote against the economic stimulus plan that passed the House last week.

"They know it's a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill," he said. "Now, I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don't care what's in the bill, they just want it to pass and they want it to be unanimous."

Cooper, whose startling admission came on Liberadio, was one of about 55 House Democrats to sign a letter criticizing Pelosi for suspending debate and committee rules on the fiscal package.

"They don't mind the partisan fighting cause that's what they are used to. In fact, they're really good at it -- and they're a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like," Cooper said during the radio interview. "If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We're just told how to vote. We're treated like mushrooms most of the time."

I bet nobody read that 600+ page bill cover to cover.

On a lighter note...When asked the reason he withdrew, Daschel asked, "Don't all men withdraw after they're finished?"

Everything is true. So is that when Bush's crowd broke the law it was dangerous to the country (Attorney General incompetents especially) and of course he underfunded all the oversight agencies......SEC and the FDA so to make them impotent.

His crowd and their financial evil doing make this current stuff  pale in insignificance.

Have to agree with that. The town I lived in nearly 40 years ago was run by mostly the mob. Best city services and low taxes you can imagine. Like Mussolini: The trains ran on time.
