My question is, what the hell is wrong with the new rules?

To me, they appear quite simple.  By all means, express your opinion, but do so in a manner that does not directly attack someone else.

You can call their opinion stupid, idiotic, etc. but you cannot call that person him/her self stupid or an idiot.

It's simple, it's called respect - respect to the person, not necessarily that person's opinion.

I think these rules are not just a clusterheadaches.com but a reflection of a change in internet communities as a whole.  It's going from the wild west mentality to more civilized communities as people start to realize why they have rules about assault and slander (or for writing - libel) to begin with - you want to be able to go through your day without someone attacking you because you disagree with someone or they are just in a bad or off mood.   There will of course be places where this is still acceptable, the biker bars of the internet so to speak.  But this is a community of people suffering from a common malady, these headaches,  not a community of people who have all decided they like to play rough with each other.    The rules just say - put on the brakes before you go there.  They don't ask you to be a different person.
