Great Horned Owl

Some of you may know that my bird avatars are an indication of the species I've been seeing and hearing lately.

We've been hearing several Great Horned Owls calling to one another in the evenings over the past couple of weeks. This morning EJ asked me if I'd heard the one last night. I hadn't, but I found out just now why she'd been hearing one...

It's just before sunrise here. I stepped out on the back porch a minute ago, and startled one off the roof, above the bedroom window. They're almost completely silent in flight, so it wasn't the rustle of feathers that made me duck and 'bout jump out of my skin--it was the big shadow that suddenly appeared out of the darkness just overhead.

Gave me a turn. Smiley

We have had a nesting pair in the area for the last 10 years. This is the first winter I haven't heard them calling to each other. They are majestic birds, and yes, capable of scaring the crap out of one if not paying attention. You were blessed to be so near one.

George, WOW!!! That must have been kinda spooky to have a huge shadow and then the sound of the wings.

Reminds me of when Angie and I were driving home from our friends place a couple of miles from our place when all at once the bright sunny day had a huge shadow appear on the road, moving along just ahead of us. It was the biggest Raven we have ever seen!!! Shocked

We have since seen it and this thing is huge. Every once in a while we see it cruising over top of our road between their place and ours.

Stealth. Loose, comb-like softened edges of the feather's fringe breaks down turbulance, muffling sound. Add hearing, sight, talons, beak, and agility, da prey is mighty surprised, too.

Around here, just stray cats tend to any tailed little paw tracks ending in the snow.
