A surveillance camera filmed the incident, and shows the man, on fire, fleeing the pump.
The driver, a passenger and a baby still in the vehicle escaped unharmed, the Associated Press reported.
The victim's mother told KPHO on Monday that her son was on leave from the war in Iraq, and suffered burns to 20 percent of his body.
