For the last week, I have been sick as a pig with gastroenteritis. I can't keep anything down at all and I've just about had enough.

What remedies do you use at home to help sickness? I'm willing to try anything. I'm on ginger ale at the moment and that's about it.

Hi Em,

Unfortunately I've been going through a similar stomach problem for the last week and then some... ended up in the ER from dehydration.  Make sure and Stay Hydrated!!!  I couldn't even keep down much water/ fluids - the reason I went in  Sad  Be careful!
a few things suggested for gastroenteritis:

"Avoid certain foods and substances until you feel better. These include dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods."
"Be cautious with medications. Use medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) sparingly, if at all. They can make your stomach more upset. Use acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) cautiously"  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

and a few things for sickness in general that help:
- ginger tea - take fresh ginger root from the store and boil it if the tea bags that you can buy don't work for you - I found they were too spiced up for my liking.  This was more effective than ginger ale for me.  Chamomile tea might help too...
-yogurt, esp. with probiotics is said to help this condition.   Wink
-Peppermint can be soothing on the stomach too - in whatever form - tea, candies, etc.

Have you asked your doctor for any anti-nausea meds?  There are many out there... besides over-the-counter stuff.

Sorry you have this. I had it in February for a week and a half. It was awful. I actually went to the emergency room because a doctor thought it might be my gall bladder-but it wasn't. When I was there the intern gave me ten pills " Metoclopramide" which took the nausea away and within three days I was back to normal. Val was correct about avoding the certain foods. Hope that you feel better soon !!!

Em I'm STILL taking flippin anti emetics daily and they aren't pleasant. I hope you don't need to go that route. If swallowing volume in liquids upsets your tummy try just ice cubes, that works for me when I get truly grotty.

Also I don't know why it works but it does - I have noticed I just eat "white" food. It's all I can bear when I get really anti food (from throwing up)

I'll just eat rice, or cauliflower, mashed potato (no fat) if I can stand it because I can't face souds sometimes) and bananas

I hope you feel better soon (((HUG)))

The Docs recommend the "BRAT" Diet;  Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.  Mild enough for an upset stomach, but still reasonably nutritious.  No dairy.  And if you drink soda pop, try to find the kinds made with real sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup.  HFCS is hard on a recovering tummy.

Best of luck on feeling better - not a fun way to spend your time.

Sounds nasty. I had something like it three weeks ago and spent most of my time strecthing out my TP so I didn't have to start on the newspaper. I didn't have a lot of trouble keeping stuff down but that BRAT diet sounds like a good thing to me.

Good luck!

Was just going to mention the BRAT diet as well, but Pat beat me to it.
Also, keep pushing fluids. Flat lemon lime soda with lots of ice in it will help...........sadly, the only thing that will fix it, is time.

Couch, blankie, good movie.repeat as necessary.
Feel better!

Thanks folks. Think I'll be trying some of that. The main goal is to find something that I won't be put off for life when it comes back up. Sad Today lunch was an ice-lolly and some jelly (jello for over-the-ponders! Wink). Nice soft things.

I'm allergic to anti-nausea meds (had my appendix removed as a result of an allergic reaction, but that's another story), so doc won't even chance it with me. I've been given til Tues to get better or I'm in for a drip. I'm not keeping anything down at all. Not sure I could face rice, but bananas and mash could be next on the list. Poor Stephen has been at the supermarket every day picking something up to try.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'll let you know if something works.

If you let the ginger ale go flat, it will help to keep it down, as well as being room temp.

Cream of wheat is a possibility.  Mashed bananas in it helps the flavor go down as well.

Maybe cream of rice cereal instead, and it can be eaten cold like a pudding as well with the bananas and/or applesauce.

Ok, I know this sounds yucky, but a little nutmeg (not more than about a 1/4 teaspoon) sprinkle it in your hand and lick it up. Works on kids and grown ups alike. Granny's home rememdy. (Ok so I got it from my uncle, the sea captain - not many drug stores in the middle of the ocean and he swore by it for about 50 years).

Thanks again folks. I'm gonna try the nutmeg one for sure. To be honest Barb, I feel so deathly, if you'd told me to lick a badger's arse I'd probably be scrabbling round in a field for one right now (or raiding Helen's potion cupboard!).

PS - Bananas and toast are off the list  Sad But lemon-lime soda with lots of ice is a keeper. Even though I'm still sick, it stays down a little longer than the ginger ale. It's got to be a bit fizzy though.

You might want to call your local Health Food store and see what they say.

Hope you feel better soon.

Em, you might try a light brewed green tea with honey and cinnamon in it.  Sip slowly and wait between sips to be sure it is going to stay put.

I've used it myself when nothing else would stay down, including any anti-emetics.

I always like tea when I've got stomach issues. sooths my stomach and if it has to come up, it's easier for me to deal with it.

Thanks all. I've been in hospital since Monday on a drip. It all got a bit silly and I was extremely unwell, so they took me in.

After 24 hours of observation, I was given an anti-emetic under the very watchful eye of the consultant and 3 nurses to make sure I didn't react badly. It was pretty good. Within 24 hours I ate a meal. They took the drip out yesterday and stopped the drugs but I had to eat 2 meals without any sickness before they would send me home.

So fingers crossed, I'm all good to go. Been told that I have to stay on bed rest for another couple of days just to make sure I stay hydrated and keep eating to let my system recover fully.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!
xx
