Dont understand this cycle
Apr 27th, 2009 at 10:53pm

Hi all, although I'm a newbie here, Ive been a cluster head for 20+ years...and I have a question obout my current episode. When I first started with the beast, it would only come out while I was having a couple beers; the after time it started into the pattern of hits w/o beer, but alchohol was definately a trigger. It has continued this way for the rest of the time, till now. FORTUNATELY, I'm only getting hits when I have a beer(wich I am laying off of now) and none that are not alchohol induced; just like way back in the beginning. I'm trying not to get hopes up, but could this be a sign of remission?? I'm 45 years old and would be nice to have a little peace (lol) Does the beast EVER just GO AWAY???? Thanks for any input!! Smiley

Its happened that the beast gets distracted. for long periods of time.

Seems its a party animal and the sound of beers popping or wine pouring can bring him back for those of us who have met him in this way.

Havent had a beer or wine in maybe 7 years or more for just that reason. Still got hits all the same though.

I'm sitting here laughing WITH you. BEFORE I had CH (was there a time - I'm OLD it's hard to remember back that far). I would drink a beer and get this awful headache. Couldn't figure it out... I'd get the hangover before I finished drinking. Of course that was back in my "serious" drinking days and I didn't pay much attention -- When I drank mixed drinks it didn't happen - just when I drank beer.

Then as the years went by, it started happening more and more and THEN it started happening without the BEER.... That's when I got concerned and went to the doctor about my "sinus" headaches. Of course he figured out it wasn't sinus  - it was just harmones. After a couple of years - he harmone replacements didn't work anymore and (after two months of hell) I got to a teaching hospital and a neuro dept that actually KNEW what CH was and got diagnosed.

But BEER was out (as all alcohol) for about 12 years. Then one day I really wanted a beer (and I had my meds handy) so I drank one and NOTHING happened so I drank another one and still nothing (ok, I didn't push it after the second one). Now I can drink an occasional beer and mixed drinks don't bother me (at least I've never had them bother me - so far...... nothings for certain with these things).

Everyone of us is different and have different triggers. And one time something will trigger a CH - the next time it may or may not (Had one triggered by MSG one time - never again). Each of us has to figure what we can and can't eat and drink - do and not do. Nothing is in concrete with these things.

Oh indeed booze is a huge trigger for me when I’m in a cycle, but only if I’m in a cycle at any other time only a hang over headache is the cost of a few drinks.

But then my cycles are very mild (normally) comparative to a lot of stories I have read on this site. They generally last only a few weeks and don’t have daily beast attacks just the constant misery of shadows.

Like mentioned above, I too for years was perplexed why a hangover should kick in after only a few beers while I was still out and its only been since last year that I self diagnosed myself with Chs

I’m currently on a cycle right now, this one has been late. I’ve spent the last 5 years sober on Christmas day and news eve because of the ironic relentless compunction the beast has to visit me over that period However for a change this year he came at Easter. Is he religious ?

Thanks folks!! Alchohol is only a trigger now when I'm in cycle, but thats just it... its not really cycling!! All these years,I new when a cycle was coming after when after 1-2 beers I got hit, so I would stop with the beer for as long as it took for cycle to be over (6-8-10 wks). Then I would test the waters and no hits for 12-18 months. I would get hits during a cycle w/o the beer, but this cycle is different...no hits if no beer, BUT 1 beer and I get NAILED!!! I dont know whats going on Undecided

I BBQ'ed when I got home today. Without beer it's not the same.

I'm 49 and as I've hit my mid 40's my remissions have gotten longer and longer. I missed my fall AND my spring cycle this year....crossing my fingers they've left me for good! Wink (Still have 8 E=Tanks in the garage just in case)

Some people have seen them disappear as they've gotten older..others in their 70's still have them. So prepare for the worst and hope for the best!

Beer does it for me as well in cycle.

I am going to Vegas next week so tomorrow I am going to have two shots of liqour and see if that has the same effect (effect being I get awoken an hour after sleep with a HA) as beer does... I know this seems silly but I have a strong suspicion that beer may be more of a trigger than straight liqour.

I will let you all know what happens.

I have my imitrex ready!
