Anyone have some spare vibes?
May 2nd, 2009 at 11:03am

I was awakened early this morning with a phone call from my brother.  My mother has been hospitalized Sad  I knew she had been sick with a bug, but didn't think much of it.  My brother had to take her to the hospital first thing yesterday morning as she was having a hard time breathing.

All I know right now is they are treating her for bronchial pneumonia, I have no other details.  My brother views me as the grim reaper, whenever a family member has been ill and hospitalized, if I show up, it's because they are on their way out, so he didn't even bother to call me when they first admitted her, and he won't give me all the details.

Please add my mom, Jackie Dalgety, to any prayers, vibes, juju, whatever you can spare.  There's just the 3 of us now, myself, my brother and my Mom.  She is a person who needs to be needed, and right now she doesn't feel that way.  I'm afraid that she's simply going to give up.

I feel very helpless with her being so far away Sad  I want to go back home so I can help her convalesce when she is released from the hospital, but it's just not financially feasible right now.

If you have anything to spare, I'd be most grateful and appreciative of your positive energy to help my Mom get better.  Cry

Thanks everyone.  I've talked to Mom a couple of times now, and she is still having a hard time breathing - she sounds like she is gasping for air with every word.  She has a sinus infection and had an eardrum pierce and that is infected as well so she's suffered the misery of vertigo on top of everything.

As of yesterday, blood gas levels and o2 sats were still low so they weren't going to release her.  When I talked to her this morning, the doc hadn't been in yet, but she said the nurse said her pulmonary function test was good.

Apparently this has been going on for 12 days now, and she chose to ignore it and remain at home self treating, not even realizing she had a respiratory illness  Huh  Now I know where I get it from LOL.

She is itching to go home, and will do her best to talk the doc into releasing her, since she's close friends with him, but I hope he says no.  If she goes into another coughing spasm like the one that got her in the hospital, she will have no one around to help her - and she won't let me come home to stay with her for a few days while she recovers.  Damn mothers....stubborn lot I tell ya.

She is just brushing this off, not accepting that bronchial pneumonia is a serious illness and can have serious complications for someone over 65.  Fortunately for me, I have a huge family here I can count on, and all  you prayers and vibes mean the world to me - I know the miracles they can produce, and with her in the hands of my cluster family, I know she is in good hands, the best hands actually.

Thanks all
Cat

Please keep us up-to-date, Cat.  Hope she gets past this quickly.

Poor Jackie....my Mom had a bout of vertigo some years ago, due to an inner ear infection.  It's purely miserable.

All the best,

George

*sigh* Mom managed to talk the Dr into releasing her today.  I understand her desire to be at home, she finds hospitals stressful and says she gets no rest there.

I find myself in a bit of a catch 22 position.  Mom isn't strong enough yet to be on her own, but she won't stay in hospital, and my brother has made it crystal clear he doesn't want me coming home.  In fact he didn't even bother to call me and tell me Mom was in the hospital until the 2nd day.  It turns out she called him at 6a.m. Friday morning and asked him to take her in, he didn't call to tell me til Sat. morning.  He knew I'd have been on the first flight home if he'd told me Friday, and I knew just how sick she was.  It was Shannon, Mike's fiance, who told me the truth of the situation.

For whatever reason, he's got his knickers in a knot and believes that I will cause Mom more stress - that she'll feel she has to entertain me and cook meals etc. even though in reality I'm probably the only one who could stay with her 24/7 and her NOT worry about anything except herself.  Unfortunately, if I go home, Mom will surely sense the tension with Mike, and that won't be helpful.  If I don't go home, I'm worried Mom will think I am unconcerned.  So I've conspired with Shan to keep me updated with the truth of the situation, and she is going to spend the day with Mom tomorrow, and take her to her Dr appt in the a.m. and then call me and let me know exactly what the doc has said, then I can make a better decision from there.  Until then, Shan will stay with her tomorrow, and then stop in and check on her at least 2-3 times a day, and my niece is going to stop in and check on her as well.

Mom is still very weak, and she is by no means up to doing anything except keeping her stubborn a$$ in bed and resting.  Fortunately we have a family friend who is also a Dr that I've put a call into, and Emur is going to go round and check on her as well as I've talked to Betty, her next door neighbor.

That's about all I can do until I get more information after the Dr appt tomorrow.

I don't know why my brother is behaving the way he is, perhaps it's just out of fear that my coming home must mean Mom is seriously ill and superstition has the better of him.

In the meantime, I sit here feeling rather helpless and more than a little bewildered;  I thank you all very much for your thoughts, prayers, vibes and support.  It means the world to me, and I can feel the positive energy already going to work for Mom.

*hugs* and thank you again - this family is the best, I'd be lost without you all.

Just saw this thread Cat.

Forget your brother.  Listen to your heart.  If you think you need to be there, go.  If not, don't and keep close by phone.  Either way, make your decision for your own reasons.

She's on my list and won't come off till you tell me all is well...

Well, I've managed to calm myself down enough to be able to post an update.... *warning ranting raving lunatic post to follow* hehe

Turns out my brother took Mom to the hospital on THURSDAY but didn't bother to let me know about it until Saturday morning - then had the audacity to tell me he took her in on Friday.

Mom's coming along, she is a long way from well, and a long recovery ahead of her.  She went to the Dr. yesterday morning, Shan (my brother's fiance - bless her heart) took Mom - seems Mom thought she was going to drive herself.  By the time she got home from the Dr. appt and a quick stop to get prescriptions filled, she was absolutely utterly exhausted.

I've talked with Shan and Mom both about this situation, and how unhappy I am about it. 9 years ago my Dad was taken to hospital at 11 a.m. and passed away before midnight the same night, so Mike bloody well knows better than to have pulled a stunt like this.  Talking with Shan about it, and basically Mike refuses to even THINK Mom might be elderly and frail after a protracted illness and complicated bronchial pneumonia.  My Mom is only just 66, and she is anything but the picture of elderly.  She is a going concern, still working 2 days a week doing the accounting for Mikes business, and then sits on an appeals board for unemployment insurance;  She swims almost every day, and is fit and active - so for her to have been ill enough to be hospitalized, Mike should have used his head for more than a hat rack and realized that is something he needs to tell me about immediately, not 48 hours later.  Mike simply wants to live in denial that anything could ever happen to Mom;  I can respect that, however, that doesn't give him the right to remove MY options to back home so I can care for Mom.

Mom said today that she wished I had come home *sigh* - but as it turned out, Alex came down with a fever and I can't risk bringing any more viruses in contact with Mom.  We've pretty much agreed that Shan is going to take care of the physical side this week, and then I'm having her come down here to the mountains for several days R&R in a beautiful mountain spring setting.  We have everything arranged for me to get home on the next flight out if Mom takes a turn poorly;  There's not much else I can do other than talk to her on the phone and hound her non stop to park her a$$ on the couch and rest.  I don't think I'll be satisfied she is on the mend until she is able to talk on the phone without getting out of breath.  She was sounding a bit frightened today, so I've got Betty (next door neighbor) going over to check on her, and Shan is going to bring her dinner around 5.

Thank you everyone for your continued support and prayers, please keep them coming if you can, she's not out of the woods yet, and I've got one of those dreaded Cat feelings this isn't going to be over anytime soon.  My Mom NEVER admits to be frightened by an illness - not once in all the years - to include her surgery for cancer - yet she flat out said at lunch that she was damn scared when she went into that coughing fit while in the hospital - and is nervous and a bit afraid it might happen at home.

I'm half afraid if I were to go back home now, I'd strangle my brother, and that wouldn't be conducive to Mom resting and recovering hehe.

So as long as she does nothing, and just lets herself rest and recover, she should do fine - even though it's going to take a fair amount of time.  Mom isn't a patient person, and she truly detests being unable to do something for herself, so the concern is more that she is going to cause a backslide by not following doctors orders.  At least if I was at home, she'd have O2 in the house.... ah well, sometimes the universe decides things differently than what you want.  When I get my hands on my brother, he's going to wish he'd dialed the damn phone.......

Thanks again everyone, it means a great deal to me - at least ONE of my families takes the time to let me know how things are going....
