Has anyone tried to get disability?
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:09am

My CHs are severe enough and the meds in high enough doses that I cannot work and have not been able to for years now.  I have CHRONIC CHs that are exacerbated by any degree of sunlight, flashing lights, lightening, lightbulbs going out (that stupid flash has killed me more than once!), etc.   Sad I also have a component of neuralgia that causes a constant dull ache.  I have a doctor who is schooled in HAs and knows pretty much about CHs, enough to know not to let me try stupid stuff that does not work (like herbal therapy and vitamins and stuff).

I have applied for Social Security disability about 3 months ago and do not know a verdict yet.

Has any other chronic sufferer applied for disability?  If so, did you get it or did you have to appeal?  How long did it take for the decision to get to you?

Please help so I can learn from you guys, particularly about a time frame.

Thank you all very much for your responses! Smiley

Private disability you can get pretty much immediately, they are required to follow a doctor's instructions that you are disabled. If they balk too much, threaten to contact the state insurance board and it will miraculously be covered. You do have to keep looking for a treatment that works, but you'll probably do that anyway.

SS will probably deny you until you appeal to a judge. Legally they SHOULD cover you immediately, it IS insurance so you have a right to collect it, but they make you jump through so many loopholes you might find it easier to hire an attorney. They usually have some sort of plan in place that takes a percentage of the money you are owed in back pay, but once you get it future payments are all yours.  It takes more than a year to get unless you have other serious complications. Make sure you include EVERY diagnosis in your application, including things you may not think of but probably have like depression. In between hits you may not be depressed but if you get such severe hits that you have suicidal thoughts you would be classified as severely depressed (If you have suicidal thoughts in between headaches you may want to check yourself into a hospital).

I've had halfway decent response from private insurance. I was on disability for 6 months last year and and I've been out since Easter this year.

Social Security is a different matter. My aunt was a SS claims rep/adjuster for more than 20 years. According to her, "headaches" aren't something they usually (ever) award disability for. Short of a judge ordering it or divine intervention with the rep, your application will probably be denied.

Good luck though.

I am on SS disability.  Was approved the first try.  I had a long history of jobs gained and lost due to hospital visits/admits and just plain bad times with my chronic CH.  I gave a ton of documentation from doctors, hospitals, treatments, jobs, and information about clusters.  I believe it took 3-6 months for the approval letter.

I have been waiting 10 years for disability. I keep getting turned down and it is because I had an ex husband who told the doctor I was drug seeking and an alcoholic. That was 6 years ago. Of course that was all cow poopy! A lot of people with CH know that alcohol can be a trigger so I avoid it like the plague! And as for drug seeking.... well if the doc had this pain on a regular basis she would look like a drug seeker too. When one will do anything to get rid of the pain one acts a bit nuts at times. However I am too much of a fraidy cat to buy illegal substances. I cant even imagine having to serve jail time and have this problem! So I am not an alcoholic or a drug addict. But I keep getting denied. I do have an attorney. I wish you all the best. If you have any legal problems with drugs or alcohol it is wise to be up front at first. I never had anything other than 2 speeding tickets. Like I said .... scared of jail. Just be honest and tell them everything.

Rats. That's pretty nasty of him.

As I posted on the other page, I have disability but I applied because of my 50 years of uncontrolled epilepsy. Losing four jobs and not driving worked for me but it took me 2-1/2 years to get it. Things got sticky. I came very close to losing my house and pretty much sold everything I had. Still, as I posted, I have no right to complain about myself. With help from my doctor and friends, I won my case.

found this article - Headache as a Real Disease
Richard B. Lipton, MD and Marcelo E. Bigal, MD, PhD
Acceptance of headache disorders as “real diseases” is now widespread due largely to advances made over the last 50 years in diagnoses, treatment, and the understanding of pathophysiology. Drs. Lipton and Bigal examine the path to acceptance and the impediments that had to be overcome.

I was chronic and got 8 ch a day every day lasting 1 1/2 hrs each.  That is kip 10's 16 hrs a day.  I could not function at my job or as a parent.  Life sucked.  I was depressed and suicidal.  I also suffered from migraines.  I got 8 of those a month as well.  I had tried everything on the market and nothing worked for me to prevent the ch or migraines.  I was in the ER 8+ times a month every month and hospitalized many times for ha.  I had letters from employers and coworkers and drs.  I applied for SSDI for ch, migraines and depression.  In 6 months I was approved for SSDI NOT because of the ch or migraines but because of the depression it caused.  I had to meet with one of their shrinks by the way and was only temporarily approved.  They thought the depression would get better after 2 years.  It didn't but I found a way to prevent my ch and migraines with opiates prescribed by my dr.  I have been pain free for 8 years.  However I still suffer from depression and schizophrenia and have a bad back.  So I stay on SSDI.  It has been 8 years now.  Good luck applying.
