Trying not to hit the Panic Button.....
May 4th, 2009 at 6:49am

Milton High School called off school, at least today and tomorrow, "probable" Swine Flu case.  As most of you know, we have a 16 year old son (Matt), that attends the school.  Will just have to keep an eye on him, this is a little scarey when it hits this close to home....

Just remember, this flu is no worse than the flu that comes around every fall.  If your son should show any signs of illness, call your doctor and follow their lead.  This flu responds well to Tamiflu.

Which is why I totally don't understand the WHO taking this thing to level 6 pandemic (I heard this mentioned on the news today).

From what are we being distracted?

Don't panic Diane. Now, from what I understand, just get some of that over-the-counter junk....does it really help kids?.....when real flu symptons show up.

Cable news is sure having their fun with this. Nothing better than fear to keep you glued. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Oh. There are supposed to be two cases here in my county and they closed a school for a day or two but things are back to normal.

Yep, Diane....a Mom's worries are NEVER done.

Just keep your eyes peeled and if he shows any symptoms get him to the doc.

Delta told it like it is.  The news media tries to scare us to death.

Love to you all....

Brew,
I just looked and the WHO has not raised the level to 6, or pandemic.  All those levels do is represent the spread of the illness, it has nothing to do with the severity.

in Phase 1 no viruses circulating among animals have been reported to cause infections in humans.

In Phase 2 an animal influenza virus circulating among domesticated or wild animals is known to have caused infection in humans, and is therefore considered a potential pandemic threat.

In Phase 3, an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks. Limited human-to-human transmission may occur under some circumstances, for example, when there is close contact between an infected person and an unprotected caregiver. However, limited transmission under such restricted circumstances does not indicate that the virus has gained the level of transmissibility among humans necessary to cause a pandemic.

Phase 4 is characterized by verified human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus able to cause “community-level outbreaks.” The ability to cause sustained disease outbreaks in a community marks a significant upwards shift in the risk for a pandemic. Any country that suspects or has verified such an event should urgently consult with WHO so that the situation can be jointly assessed and a decision made by the affected country if implementation of a rapid pandemic containment operation is warranted. Phase 4 indicates a significant increase in risk of a pandemic but does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a forgone conclusion.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.

During the post-peak period, pandemic disease levels in most countries with adequate surveillance will have dropped below peak observed levels. The post-peak period signifies that pandemic activity appears to be decreasing; however, it is uncertain if additional waves will occur and countries will need to be prepared for a second wave.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and everything.  It would appear all is going to work out. We just received a phonecall that school will reopen on Wednesday (if nothing else comes up).  The student that is 95% probable swine flu, has evidently been out of school since last Tuesday.  Matt doesn't show any signs  of flu yet, and is getting sick of me asking him how he is feeling, or putting my hand on his forehead to see if he has a fever, (ha, ha).

Thanks, again.

Carolyn,

As I mentioned, I was merely reporting something I had read in the news:

Brew,

Don't you know?  You can't cite Fox News these days.  It's not accepted anymore.    C'mon.

Okay, let me rephrase that: Margaret Chan, director of the World Health Organization, indicated in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais that the organization would likely raise its alert for the H1N1 swine flu outbreak to the highest level and declare a pandemic.

Yep, if it comes from Fox, it must be a lie. Tongue

CNN, FOX, MSNBC ET AL, if it comes from one of the talking heads it may not be an out right lie. But it is certainly suspect. They still think Hackers write Viriie and break into the Pentagon, and banks and things. Bunch of dopes.
