Just a tip

If you are seeking employment, do not misspell the name of the college you attended.  I'm looking at a resume right now that has me shaking my head.  I think I may forward this to the college the kid attended.  It is that bad.

What position are you looking to fill Beth?

This reminds me of the chalk announcements that were written across sidewalks all over campus when I attended 14 years ago.

It had been a mild winter to this point, and no snow had yet to remain on the ground and it was nearing the Holidays.

Well wishes were scribbled everywhere, and as I came upon the entry to the Collins Classrooms of Letters and Science building for my writing emphasis class I was stunned to read the following...

"Pease on Earth and Seasons Greatings"

Shocked

i know an old machinist who cant spell very well. his net worth is over $5,000,000 in real estate not including his multi million $$$ machines that he owns which he owes no money on. his trigonometry skills are amazing but he he probably cant spell the word.  he consistently runs thousands of parts on a manual engine lathe keeping  keeping the tolerance within .0005 of an inch. he's very well respected in his field, he's honest and started out in his garage.  i don't think he made it past the 9th grade and he's probably one of the smartest people i know.

then there's my uncle leon. leon has an 8th grade education. he's started up trucking companies and failed. for the last 15 years he's been successful. when i was younger i can remember him building these 13 axle rigs out of raw steel and a huge lincoln arc welder. the first couple of rigs that he built he didn't even have a building. just a gravel lot, an old beat up box trailer, a couple flatbeds, 3 or 4 cab over freightliners and an old beat up f-350. when he retired he owned 20 late model internationals 15 flatbeds 5 13 axle superload rigs which he fabricated from raw steel, several flatbed straight trucks, several commercial properties a new f-350 dually and the old box van trailer still full of tools and welding equipment.  leon cant spell either but his wife can.

perhaps the applicant needs to set his sites on a different occupation Smiley

Had a kid apply to work in the gas station I was running while finishing College.  He misspelled 23 words on a one page app, including his own name!  One place I remember he had worked was for a ladscraber.  Took me a bit to figure that one out, so I remembered it.  We were doing $10-12,000 a day with gas at $.599 at the time.  He thought I was being prejudiced because I wouldn't hire him!  He even filed a grievance with the Labor Dept.  When I showed the app to the lady she just started laughing.

I hear what you are saying Johnny.  Spelling and punctuation are not requirements for success, but I am sure the machinist and your uncle were wise enough to see that weakness in themselves and hire someone to take care of that part of the business for them.  My son cannot spell worth a crap, but he is the hardest working kid I know and is doing very well in school.  I know he will be very successful in spite of his spelling skills.  I even had several of his teachers tell me exactly that.

I normally overlook minor spelling errors, but when spell check is ignored, and the applicant cannot even have someone look over the resume before sending it out, I have reservations.  That little piece of paper represents who you are to perspective employers.

It is sad when you see something like that (laughable, yes, but sad).  I used to be a store manager and I thought I had seen it all with job applicants, until one showed up in a crop top and short shorts.  Trust me, she should NOT have been wearing them in the first place, let alone to an interview!

My friends would come to me to do their resume - they even referred their kids and other friends.  I finally bought them a pocket dictionary, thesaurus and I gave them links to sample resumes - some are samples are for the job you're applying for , which makes it easier.

I also cannot stress enough to use "spell check" and that it isn't always perfect either.  Then I would review.   We even would do fake interviews and told them the do's and don'ts.  I would charge them too - $25.  Not bad I don't think.

Seems this helped them a lot.  Doing the same thing with Crystal's friends.

The worst was helping out Executive Level bosses that couldn't spell and I mean couldn't spell.  I would finally tell them "just tell me what's the message(s) you want to convey."  Figured it would be easier for me to just do it.

Everyone makes mistakes, but when you have a problem spelling your street name...I think it's time for an intervention.  LOL

Kids and Texting - That's what most of them do all day - kids are forgetting what little English they do know. I have an agreement with Crys - that anything she writes to, I don't care if it's a grocery list or an email to me - it better be spelled correctly.  Plus she has to read a new book a month (that i've already read), so she can write a book report on it - notice I said a book I'VE already read so she doesn't try to be sneaky). I always believed that reading helped tremendously with your spelling. I always gave her a list of the most mispelled names in the English language.  (I found it on the internet).

In the long run, I think they''ll thank you for having saved them much embarrassment.

Lastly, there's nothing like getting a positive response to a good resume from an employer, which has happened to a few of them.

And plus it wil help them help others.

I don't even know where to begin with the "clothing" some of the people i've interviewed wore.  I had to tell them to go home and not to book another interview until they were dressed appropriatly for the position she was applying for.

Hugs,
Langa

PS: Sorry for the long post. (OH, AND YOU CAN MAKE FUN OF ME IF I MISPELLED SOME WORD(S) - just know I expect a donut with it.  Kiss

Years ago I worked for a small manufacturing company. We advertised for a warehouse/shipping/receiving position. The first day we probably had over 200 applicants before lunch. I saw all kinds. In our lobby we had just seating for 2 people.

The one I remember is the guy that came in with his 9 month preggo wife. This was before cellphones you know. So he was out hustling jobs but couldn't leave her at home, so he brought her. And there was no where for her to sit. And the other guys interviewing didn't get up for her.

Yea, none of them got the job, and yes, I DID go get her a chair!

I taught a class in Applied Economics at a local high school and each year we had a 6 week course in resume writing and job interviews (this was taught to seniors). After 12 years of education, these kids were clueless!

It was so bad, I had a visit with my State Representative and PRESENTED him with their work. He was as appalled as I was, but nothing was really done about it.

Over the years I've employed VICA students as well as college students and apparently no one has EVER taught them (where were their parents???) how to dress for a job. And yes, I've sent them home to re-dress more than once.

One of my standard questions in an interview got to be: Do you know your ABC's? If they answered YES - I had them SAY them! Funny? Not really. I had a SENIOR that was hired who DID NOT know her ABCs - we discovered this when she was "trying" to FILE.

Resumes ARE important and should be done right IF you are applying for a job. If you can't spell - PAY someone to do them for you. It's worth the price. It's a FIRST impression just like your appearance. AFTER you get the job, THEN you can SHOW the employer your "common sense", but the IDEA is to GET the job FIRST.

Some can't read either.  I used to look at the applications that I made them fill out, and see if they follow basic instructions:

Fill in name (Last name first):   Mary Smith   DUH!!!

List last three jobs, last one first:
1990-1999 Joe's bakery
1999-2003 George's Garage
2003-2008 Fred's Haberdashery

Hello?  Did you READ the instructions?  How about the next job you apply for (because you are NOT going to get a job here!), read and FOLLOW those instructions!

And then the reasons they left their last job:
I punched out my boss.

I got caught stealing from the cash register.

I skipped work around 10 times a month.

They tried to make me work harder than I wanted to.

The above were actual answers on job applications forms that were turned in to me!

Oy VAY!

Chuck

I get a ton of spelling issues, but I teach elementary school so it's expected. I was grading some 2nd grade tests yesterday. One of the questions was to list three objects you see in the picture. One of the students answers was "f*g". I'm trying to figure if he meant flag because there is a flag or if he really meant the little boy in the picture looked like a f*g??? Who knows???? Good spelling is important so that you can communicate what you mean and not be misunderstood!
