life passages
May 26th, 2009 at 11:06pm

My garage is empty.

I sold my classic car   (67 Mercury Caliente)  tonight.

I know, I know….it’s only a car.  Steel, glass, chrome and rubber.   But I watched as it slipped down the street, away from me.    Driven by a stranger.

This car that  I’ve had for 11 years now.   This pink car that has won 1st. prize in it’s class at car shows.   This pink  car that saw me blubbering and sucking for air as someone drove me around the block with my head out the window at 2 am.  Because I forgot to refill my 02 tanks on Friday.

The guy who bought it…had it in mind for his 13 yr. Old daughter once she gets her drivers license.   I wrote her a letter to be read after she got home.  It said in effect do not let any teen=age guy talk you into driving this.   He’ll just want to race it, not care about YOUR insurance or if he trashes it.   And he will.

I told her about driving that car to Arizona (AND on a grade) where it got to be 120 in the shade and never once did that car let me down.   I told her about the blizzards and snow in Spokane Washington and the snow tires I put on and never once did that car slip, slide…or let me down.

I didn’t tell her about the many hours I spent in that car in some parking lot or in in a rest stop somewhere in the middle of Nebraska….huffing 02…pounding on the dashboard crying for relief, shooting the Trex, hoping the cops won’t show up & make me explain WTF  was going on…I didn’t tell her about that.

No...of course that car or any car...doesn't/didn't didn’t define me….but it sure as hell was a huge part of me.  Guess, I’ll certainly have to change my e-mail address now..How about this.... Linda at sad.com    Cry Cry Cry

I think I felt a little bit of that when I sold my first bass.

But probably just a little bit.

Aw Linda - I'm sorry for your loss.   Sad

A loss is a loss whether it's a car, a pet,  or a person.  Mourn as much as you need to and let the happy memories sustain you when you're done.

Awwww, this makes me sad RoadWarrior!!

I'm sure that 13 year old girl will cherish the car as much as you did.

Take care,
Mast

Sorry Linda Sad.
I had a 77 Trans Am I put all my money, heart and soul into but had to sell it, a young lady bought it.
Two days later I see the car, now sporting huge over size tires on the back, the young lady's boyfriend and his three buddies eating greasy KFC in the car, case of beer in the back seat and away they go squealing the tires and tunes cranked.

At that moment I said good bye to my baby and knew it's life was going to be a rough and short one. Three month's later she was completely driven into the ground Angry

I know it was just a car I know, but....... Cry

The memories will go on. Look at some of the similar feelings expressed.

Letter was a nice touch.

Oh Linda...what a classy story 'bout a classic car. Thank you! Felt good to remember didn't it?

It don't have to be alive to be loved...reminds me of my beloved "green blankie". Mom had to recover it several times (always in green, a wise woman, that). I stopped sleeping with it at 10 and pulled it out of the closet at 12...carefully folded and gently placed in the garbage can...figured I was a "big" boy now, and green blankets weren't part of that.

Now then, nothing is really gone...not when you have your memories. Must admit, over these past 27 yrs of ch, there have been more than a few times when I craved the comfort of that little green blanket, BUT, I do have the memories...so do you.

And, maybe only a fellow clusterhead can find the humor in this...but
"huffing 02…pounding on the dashboard crying for relief, shooting the Trex, hoping the cops won’t show up & make me explain WTF  was going on"
brings a smile...BEEN THERE, several times, as the cops slowly rolled by, and as if the terror wasn't enough, trying to think of how you are going to explain THIS while in the throes, to someone who has never heard of ch, well, fortunately I never had to go there either...

My prescription...only a Dr of headbangology here...is to listen to "Pank Cadillac" by Bruce...better yet, Jerry Lee Lewis's version... that there is life affirming...

Best,

Jon

edit...edit...edit...My apologies for a gross misrepresentation of the song...it is, of course, a Pank Cadillac....
