Hey Everyone
Jun 30th, 2009 at 3:21am

Hello Everyone, I am new here to this site and looking for some answers, It all started about a year ago or so. I got these headaches all of the sudden at work, I do welding and it really started effecting my work, I went to the dentist thinking it was a tooth or jaw pain and the dentist said it might be this tic dela rue or something and gave me some meds which never worked.... Then I went to the doctor and he said it was either migrane or cluster headaches, he wanted to do a mri and a bunch of other expensive stuff which I can not afford, so I have not been back to see him for these headaches, they lasted for a month or so and then they stopped and I was relieved.
And now a year or so later here they are again, I have had them for about 2 weeks now and now I am at a dead end and do not know what to do... can't sleep, I lay down to go to sleep and about an hour later I am woken up by the pain, for the last 2 weeks I would say that 75% of the headaches are at night and the other 25% are during the day.... I can almost guarantee between 1-2 am and 5-6 am I will have the headaches and they seem to last 15-30 min unless I take 3-4 Ibuprofen liquid Gels then I can get them to last 15 min or less, I wish I knew when the headaches are coming on so I could try and prevent them, and about 2-3 nights a week I can sleep sound right thru the night
I am here just looking for some answers and why they are happening to me, I wish they would just go away, I have never had anything that hurt as bad as the headaches I am having

Justin,

Read the info in the tabs at the left then take the Cluster Quiz and Cluster Survey.  When you're done and it looks from your perspective like cluster headaches, give your neurologist a call and take along your quiz and survey results when you go in for the appointment.

The MRI and other tests are part of differential diagnosis process many neurologists use to rule out other sources of your headaches.  If you've captured all the symptoms you have that are associated with your headaches using the Cluster Quiz and Survey, you may be able to help your neurologist with the diagnosis.

Without a diagnosis, you're whistling in the dark and you'll not be able to get the needed prescriptions for medications or oxygen therapy.

Take care,

V/R, Batch

I got laid off about a month ago, and have no health insurance, so I do not have a lot of options, the job I worked at did not provide any insurance... I took the quiz and it seems to defiantly be a CH, but the Ch seems to not be as painful, maybe they will go away soon, had them again last night at 1:15 am lasted 15 min, and now have 1 again at 5:15, I wish I had some type of insurance now

Justin,

I was in a very similiar situation last year.  Here are a few suggestions.  Take the quiz, and start keeping a diary.  Write down everything you can in the diary.  When the attacks come, how long they last, other symtoms, blocked nose, water eyes, where the pain is located, and how bad the pain is (KIP scale on left).  Read and print articles for your Doc, and bring it all with you to the next appointment.  Better yet, try to get info to the Doc ahead of the appointment.  Make sure the Doc understands that this is effecting your life and ability to function normaly.  All of this will help them diagnose the problem.

Also, watch out for rebound headaches from the OTC pain meds.  I was eating Excedrin Migraine like candy and now think that this made it worse.  Check out my post just below yours for more info.

Don't put off finding an answer to the issue.  If you do have CH, there are ways to deal with it.  I just started the oxygen and it is a miracle!!

Hope you are able to find some aswers.  This board has been a huge help to me.

Todd

Thanks Todd, I will start... Its just I never thought what it was, last year sometime when it happened I was totally clueless on what it was, Went to the dentist thinking it was my teeth or jaw that was causing it.... This last week I have been going to the Chiropractor getting my neck popped, until i really started doing some research on it last night, like when it happened last year and it went away I never thought I would be dealing with this again

Hi Justin,

If cash is short, and you are not getting any relief from the Chiro, I'd spend my money on a Dr who knows CH.  If it is CH, the sooner you get diagnosed, the sooner you can get some relief, physically and emotionally.  It sucks sitting around waiting for another hit.  If it's not CH, then you need to find out what it is, and head in that direction.

Another tip, try skipping any alcohol.  Many people seem to find this triggers attacks.

Good luck

Todd

Thanks again Todd, I will have to call around and see if there is any doctors that know about CH, I just hope that they won't say that they do and go there and spend 100 bucks for a visit and they don't know what it really is, MRI is like 1500 bucks around here and just can not afford that, also if there is anyone around my area that knows of a doctor that knows about CH would please let me know
