<sigh>

Now THERE was an intelligent, trustworthy newsman.  Possibly the last one.

But, at least he is not suffering anymore, as he has been in poor health for some time.

He will be missed.

R.I.P.

RIP Walter, see you on the other side.

Can't help but think of Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam.

I hope he wrote an opinion of the media of today on a little note somewhere.... signing of with, "and that's the way it is".

I wonder what he would say?

How about that Moon Walter?

Aw rats. I grew up with Walter too. Irreplaceable... Cry

I'll never forget my grandmother who didn't have the best hearing calling him "Walter Klondike."

I'm glad he's resting in peace and is no longer in pain.

I knew it wouldn't be long. He's been gravely ill for awhile now.

I remember when he came and reported on a few dust ups in Viet Nam. I never believed in him again. I've enjoyed his stories over the years though.

He was an expert showman who knew how to keep up the ratings, pure accuracy was for amateurs. You had to tell the story the way people wanted to hear it. Probably the original mainstream media guy to go that direction.

I held him in high regard because he had enough self control to avoid reporting on things like the personal problems/issues of politicians - as long as it no impact on their job.

I remember several stories he covered... after the fact...I watched him break-up in reporting JKF being shot.  Fake?  maybe,  but I don't think so.

what are "dust-ups" ?

I think the emotional responses that we saw were real, that's not what I was saying.

A "dust up" is a fight. The term is generally used by us old guys for a minor fight, which we mean to minimize.  I read Kirk's comment as an understatement of the actual intensity of that particular action he saw in Nam.

Linda: sometime when we have an hour I'll try to explain it to you. Cronkite at that time just came and didn't understand what he saw, then asked questions that had nothing to do with what he saw. Couldn't figure out why our answers weren't what he expected. Then went and reported it as something else that happened.
It wasn't till years later that I understood what his problem was. Doesn't make much difference. At the time, the killing in front of us was pretty much the same as the killing behind us. Its always been that way.

You had to be there. Politics was different. What I forgot was that this was done in 1965, I believe. It took a decade.

Actually, it didn't change hawks minds, of which I was one.

We could have used him on 9/11.

You would have hated Edward R. Murrow, Marc.
