Generic Imitrex Injections...
Jul 22nd, 2009 at 6:17pm

Well, I haven't bought any Imitrex injections since 2006 when my last cycle was in full affect. However, I made a trip to the local pharmacy today to pick up my prescription for the injections for the first time this year, and they had the generic form.

Now, I've been waiting around for the generic form to FINALLY come out since the first time I shelled out the (I think it was...) $110 or so for two friggin shots back in 1999 or so. So, when they first told me that the generic form was available, I thought... "great, I can finally save some cash." Guess again.

The pharmacist begins explaining to me that the price of the name brand Imitrex has "sky-rocketed" since the last time I bought them to $203! So, the generic I was hoping to save on was now $153! Talk about a disappointment.

I'm curious what everyone else is paying for either of these when they don't have insurance. It looks to me like the folks at GlaxoSmithKline, or whatever it is, decided to jack up the price of the name brand version in order to force the generic to be higher as well!

It's not just without insurance that there is a difference...
I pay more for the generic than I do for the name brand With Insurance!!!  Crazy!    Shocked  I have to demand that they make sure to give me Brand every time.  It is counter-intuitive.
I am dreading what will happen when I lose my insurance.  It won't be long.  I think COBRA will keep me goin for a few...   Undecided

I wouldn't put it past GSK to hike the prices up before the generic came out to gain profit that they will be losing...

Don't buy from Latin American or Asian sources; too many problems with counterfeit stuff.

My pharmacy bills Aetna $508.50 for 10 vials of generic sumatriptan (10x 6mL/0.5 mg vials), and my insurance pays $439.99 of the amount billed. I pay nothing.

I should be happy about that, but I am not. $44 per frickin' shot is robbery.

-------------
Edit: I have been splitting doses in half for years, but $22 per 1/2 a dose is still frickin' robbery.

I lost my insurance when I walk out on my last job - thought it was the biggest mistake of my life. Then I realized I might qualify for medical care from the VA. Now I pay $8 for three boxes per month. Should have looked into that option after Desert Storm.
