While driving back and forth between St. Louis last week I listened to a great deal of music. I was suprise just what memories a lot of the songs brought back. So.......I thought it might be interesting to see if others had the same reaction to different songs.

This one was in the top 40 when I joined a friend in Paris, KY for a long weekend. He did a high school dance as a DJ and the kids kept asking for this song.......damn I got tired of listening to it that night.....

I've been listening to a lot of Otis Redding lately. Used to have a few cassette tapes of various Otis that I'd listen to back and forth between Milwaukee and Madison in my '74 Pontiac Catalina, goin' to see my sweetie (and you all know who that is) back in 1980 and '81.

On this video, the guitar player and bass player are none other than Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn, both from Booker T and the MG's, and later of the Blues Brothers Band.

Listening to Otis nowadays always takes me back to a more carefree, open-road time. I've still got my sweetie, but that car is long gone (and a sweet ride it was).

I've always liked Otis, but "Dock of the Bay" as good as it is, got played into the ground like it was the only thing he ever did...and I got so sick of it and couldn't separate the two.

There's a local public radio station that has blues segments, and the other day they played a song that was mesmerizingly good..I didn't recognize the singer...it was Otis! Wow!

Will be searching for some of his earlier stuff now.....

Mom and Dad had just gotten their divorce.  Mom worked afternoons and nights as the lounge manager for a supper club and I was spending my summer days at the local municipal swimming pool.  Morning dive team practice/weekend morning meets, and days from open to close perfecting my skills.

That summer, I lived in my swim suits.  After the pool closed, I'd go hang with friends, rehearse our music, drink some beer (shhh) or play gigs at the roller rink on the occasional Sunday night.   

I'd be home just before 10PM other than gig nights, and the only radio in the apartment, was part of the big console TV/Radio/Record player in the living room that we had from the time I was born.  I slept on the couch all summer long, as this song came on first thing after the top of the hour news and station break each and every night.  This was "my" song that summer.  Just seemed to fit.

I think if Bridge over Troubled Waters had not come out at the same time this would have been a much bigger hit.  I liked it better.  I like the original version much better than this one, but love to hear them harmonize in almost anything.

A month after my brother was discharged from the army, he came home and was involved in a accident that killed two of the three occupants. He survived but was in a full body cast for 6 months. I spent that summer taking care of him, including scratching his itches with a coat hanger LOL.

I'll never get the picture of The Plastic Ono Band in New York with her "singing" in a helmut, out of my head. Maybe the sound and sight of that is what deformed my hypothalamus.

During the MTV movie awards a few years ago, they wanted NIN to play their latest hit at the time "The Hand That Feeds" - Trent had an untainted, unadulterated and unaltered pic of George W. that he wanted to use as the back drop for the performance. MTV said "We can't let you do that." so he said "Fine. We can't play!" Later Trent remarked "Apparently they find the image of our president just as offensive as I do." - Now THAT is something Lennon would say!

I was privelidged enough to see NIN 2 times last year on the Lights In The Sky tour, and was blown away by both the performance, and also the stage show. A digital veil that comes down in front of the stage at different times, I can't even explain it all.... but this is one of my fave songs of his FREE album "The Slip" which was released for free online - then on vinyl, CD/DVD and you know what? He proved even if you give music away free online, people WILL buy it.
Yes, I have the vinyl! And this is an incredible performance of "Head Down" live - great quality too.

This is one of my fave NIN songs, and a very awesome, trippy video. It was only recently I found out he is making a glass of Absinthe in the video.... NOW I understand it much better having experienced Absinthe.

Reznor's a talented guy, no doubt.
Not my cup of tea for the most part but.......just too dark for me and probably isn't the best stuff for any clusterhead to listen to. Not at our suicide rate ;-/
I'm sure its good for some people to help let out the rage that this disease can dish out. I respect his music and his talent.

He and Lennon (The Beatles all) certainly had similar problems getting screwed out of money early on.

I agree that he puts plenty out there for free and on a much bigger scale than most. .. But he's also a smart businessman, like Lennon, and knows about building a market for himself.

Plenty of great rock artists have spoken out against "the man"......
it's sort of what rock is all about isn't it? He's certainly no pioneer there. You missed the 60s
He's also not the first to break away from his label so he could control the costs of his music to the public as well as make his own way. He followed the Eagles and others on that.

Lennon though, really tossed his career into the financial gutter to make his protests (or Yoko's). Even had to explain to his fans why he walked away from it all, in a song.

Lennon had his LSD. It appears that Reznor had his Absinthe. The differences are evident in their music.

Yes, they were/are both pioneers in many ways. I grant you that. Stepped WAY out of the box and took the chance that their talent would win out, and it has.
