Prednisolone worked
Aug 10th, 2009 at 12:07am

My husband had his first cluster headache at 21, he's 55 now and its been 3 years since the last bout. They usually happen every 2 years and last for 5 weeks. The last time they hit a locum doctor would only allow him 4 imigran nasal sprays a week. I was angry, I hit the Internet and found this site. I printed everything I could find on treatment. We went to our local doctors surgery and sat till someone would see us. The doctor we got was a man we knew. He listened to what we had to say (mostly about years of ineffective treatments) Read what I had found, prescribed Prednisolone even though he was reluctant. The headaches STOPPED next day!!!!

That's great that Prednisone worked for him Jude. Take care though, it's not something anyone should take long term. Has he tried breathing pure oxygen? Please see the area on this site about the proper method.

You might want to notice the area designed for cluster headache specific to see how others describe using O2 and other treatments.

Welcome.

Whenever I take Pred. two major things happen, I get HUNGRY and homicidal. If possible get back to that Doc and get your husband O2 ASAP before the Pred taper ends. 15 LPM with a Non-Rebreather mask is a bare minimum for your husband's condition. Most everything you need to know is over on the left of the page here. Don't be a stranger, or atleast no stranger than the rest of us.
   Please be well.

I have done a prednisone taper countless times. I have found that unless it is done in conjunction with a preventative med the CH returns.

Is he on a preventative?

This cycle was my first proper prednisone taper and it yielded the exact same results, absolutely no headaches until my taper came to a finish and wham bam thank you mam...! they came back with a vengeance.

My neuro did not prescribe me a prevent, so I had to rely on oxygen to see me through to the end of my cycle. I'm curious to see what my next cycle is like when I'm armed with prednisone taper, proper prevent and my 02. After almost 20 years of Mickey Mouse meds this shit is definitely getting easier.

Your doing a sterling job as a supporter, your husband is a very lucky man.....! Read up on the 02 section to your left it works wonders for many of us.

It's sounding good here Jude and 3 years without this horror is a damned nice thing to read about.

One other thing...and I hope it's true.....is that there are a significant number of people that may have "outgrown" CH. I'm 62 and I haven't been hit since 1991. I can't explain it but I'm not complaining.

Pay some attention to the cautions here though.....but I'm hoping your husband might be one of us.
