Hi , I'm new here!

Hi Everyone;
My name is Mike and I'm new here, new to message boards but certainly not new to "cluster headaches".
I've been a sufferer for 9 years now.
I dont understand why I've never looked for a support group till now.
Unless people are sufferers, they just dont understand what we go through. I want to pull my hair out everytime someone say's to me "did you take some asprin?" or yeah, I know, I get migraines too!
I'm looking forward to chatting with people who know whats up!
Mike

Well hello Mike...

Can't be my Dad, (   Shocked  ) as his name was Gene, and he passed on almost 29 years ago.

Anyway, welcome to the loony bin with the rest of us.  It doesn't matter the why...only that you are here now and and can learn exactly how to fight this beast.

Read read and read some more.

Welcome home.

Actually, "Red" was the name of one of my parrots that recently passed away.
Thank you for responding to my post. I'm new at this and still learning how to use the system.
A little about myself, I'm 49, been clustering for 9 years and am sick and tired of it!
I'm currently in a cycle. Have been for the past 3 weeks so I have another 3 weeks to look forward to. I usually cycle for 6 weeks and go into remision for about 6 weeks.
Last night I spent about 2hours at about level 9 on thre "Kip Scale". It was the scariest night I've had in a while.
Thank God my wife understands what I'm going through.

Hey Mike,

Welcome to Clusterville. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. (Watch out for Redd - she's a witch, but a good one).

We know how you feel cause we're all in the same boat (some of us chronics know waaay too well), so we're here 24/7 with support, tips, a joke, an insult or just a shoulder. And I don't think anyone will tell you take an aspirin. Roll Eyes (except as a joke)

We've got about 100 years of research on this site (compiled over an 11 year period). In fact there's more info here on CH than in most medical schools. There's a place for supporters if your wife wants to jump in. Our supporters are our lifelines. We've got some really neat people on there.

One thing I will tell you (and I forgot to look to see where you're located) - if you get a chance to MEET another CHer DO IT! It's an experience you'll never regret. I've been doing it since '99 and have yet to meet a stranger (it sounds odd, but not one CHer has been a stranger - weird but true).

Again welcome to Clusterville and your new family.

Hugs BD Kiss

Oh yeah. You found a bunch of people that want to commit various forms of mayhem on those that tell us about their migraines. We get it.

You might want to give this a try:

Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique

What follows is a technique learned from my neurologist:
I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice.

I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain.

Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working.

This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance.
I hope this technique is helpful and I wish you the best of luck
