Lockerbie Bomber set free for oil
Aug 29th, 2009 at 8:14pm

The British government decided it was “in the overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom” to make Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, eligible for return to Libya, leaked ministerial letters reveal.

Gordon Brown’s government made the decision after discussions between Libya and BP over a multi-million-pound oil exploration deal had hit difficulties. These were resolved soon afterwards.

The letters were sent two years ago by Jack Straw, the justice secretary, to Kenny MacAskill, his counterpart in Scotland, who has been widely criticised for taking the formal decision to permit Megrahi’s release.

The correspondence makes it plain that the key decision to include Megrahi in a deal with Libya to allow prisoners to return home was, in fact, taken in London for British national interests.

What a loser of a government. How sad.

Horrible.

Something bothers me that this isn't front page news all over the place and cable news. It's not politics as nothing could have stopped this here.

Don't know which cable news networks you watch, but it was covered heavily and in detail when it happened.

I didn't see it anywhere Marc but then I don't see much cable news on Sunday. Still, it should have been everywhere including newspapers. Nothing in town or Buffalo.

This says he was released because they didn't want to experience "terror backlash". Undecided

Thanks Mel.

A columnist in Buffalo says about the same thing. So far it's all I've read about it. The New York Times would be all over this story though.
