being occupied???? has this been descussed before?
Sep 6th, 2009 at 10:55pm

I just went through the worst rain storm in my 40+ years of driving. The reason I tell you this is before we hit the rain I was getting a CH and it went to a level 3 or so. I was worried because I had nothing with me to deal with it, and a 45 minute drive before I could. Now I tie it all together. On a freeway where flow of traffic is at least 70 mph it was down to 40. The rain so bad it was hard to see. The spray onto the windows not just from the cars edging by, but from my own vehicle. It was all I could do to focus and maintain the road and the only reason I didn't pull over was we were traveling it's direction. Sooner or later we had to travel through it. Now the ta da. A half hour later on the other side of all this delouse my CH was gone and I couldn't tell you when it stopped.
The question: can the demon be stopped by channeling if you will,  to another focus??
Any other time at that K level with out O2 or Imitrex I would have had a full blown CH.

Dont know if I can say this here or not......but i've had times where I felt a cluster coming on.....and i've had an erection abort a possible hit.
Call me crazy but hey....... Roll Eyes

channeling to another focus, well, i can say that it definitely helps to not concentrate on the pain Tongue

Guido-

How strange!  We did the same thing yesterday in Kentucky.  I wasn't the driver, though.  The rain was horrible and we sat in 'park' on Interstate 65 for 2 hours due to a wreck while I was having a cluster.  Being trapped in that car was not a good feeling during a HA.  But I was very thankful we were in the stand still of traffic because of the wreck instead of the wreck!

As for suddenly concentrating on something else while having a cluster, I recently was having a cluster that was especially intense when my daughter and husband were trying to tell me what to do and I kind of "lost it" there for a minute and got really angry with them.  I had to almost yell to speak over them quickly and let them know what I needed them to do.  After I got mad and yelled, my head started getting better which was much sooner than usual.  I wondered the same thing you are asking.  I suppose we will have to try it again and again to know for sure, but it was very unusual for me so I don't know if I will get the opportunity and I hope you don't have to drive like that again!  Haha.  (If you think about it, it kind of makes sense.)

The more I focus on external stimuli, the easier it is to handle my ch's.  When in cycle I sleep with tv on and lights.  I often drive through CHs when I can because they are easier to handle if I have intense focus on something else.

With that said, i have never driven during a kip 10.

It is the same principle taught in the La Maze childbirth system.  Your brain can only focus on one thing at a time.  If you can keep your focus on an outside stimulus completely enough you can minimize the pain or discomfort of whatever else you are going through.  I have used this principle for years dealing with CH.  The only difficulty is finding an outside stimulus that is stronger than the pain you are dealing with.

As an over the road driver for several years I was able to drive through many hits (probably not s well as I would wish) but only through a concerted effort to maintain full concentration on the road.  I'm afraid I would often get almost a tunnel vision as I would be afraid to take my eyes off of the centerline as it was my focal point.  If I ever lost that I would have to pull over.

I think it's possible both ways...there have been times (admittedly few) where I concentrated so intently and single mindedly ON the point of the pain, surrounding it, containing it...until it became something else (can't describe what, but it wasn't pain). Is incredibly difficult and exhausting and my willpower and ability to concentrate are not what they used to be...so I don't try any more.

The human mind...we haven't yet begun to fathom its potential...but brain scientists might want to take a look at clusterheads...we should all be nuts...but MOST of us aren't Roll Eyes

I did that for a fleeting few moments only once. I was in the "I can't take any more" phase of pain.

It started with "what is this thing called pain?"  The more I focused on the pain itself, I started to become a little bit detached from it. Hard to explain, but I suspect it would be a powerful tool if I knew how to find it again.

Yeah, I'm crazy and I know it.

i've noticed being occupied seems to keep the beast at bay.  I'm not a chronic though either.  I've only had one at work ever.  But yet i have had them in the past on a saturday/ sunday afternoon.  I've even had them on the golf course.  They get me when it is "relaxation" time.  If i've got a evening planned out w/ the boys,  almost a guarantee hit.
95% of my hits are between 5pm and 11 pm.  mostly later, 8pm to 11pm.   I have been woke up in the dead of sleep before also.
i am still caffeine free(mostly) for bout 3 months.  taking a sip of coke is a treat now!  Plus 50mg topomax at night.   I have felt the beast "want" to party many times....  I aint let him in yet.

According to my Dad yes.   Roll Eyes  He does it all the time sometimes with more success than others though.  He has been doing it for years though. I've been trying to get him to explain how or try to show me how, BUT have you ever tried teaching someone with a CH hit in progress ??? Doesn't work out well at all !!!

I've tried it and either I'm in to much fricken pain to concentrate or just plain to busy moving around to do it.  Cheesy
