The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month.
Nov 11th, 2009 at 6:33am

- the time has passed and been marked for me today but I know it's still to come for some more of us.

Once, one wonderful day, we had peace in our world at this time and the hope we would never see such horrors again.
War came back but the hope that one day we do have peace has never faded.

Thank you to all who have given their lives and their service for our freedom. I truly can't express how overwhelmed I am thinking about it but with great sincerity and gratitude I would like to post my thanks. It's not enough but it's all they want too.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The guns of August boomed, loved ones departed with a kiss to be home by Christmas, but this time countries of industry ensured no depletion of weapons and ammunition.  Lives entrenched for years in its deadliness and horror to the end.

To those before and after this commemorating day, thank you.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I will never forget, and I will always observe 2 minutes of silence.

And I know everyone is wearing their poppy today.

On Saturday, I attended the Veteran's Day Ceremony at Selman Field (aviation museum dedicated to Major General Claire Chennault, leader of the Flying Tigers and the U.S. 14th Air Force against the Japanese in China and Burma during World War II.).  Some of the pictures that I took.

My gratitude goes out to all vets, past and present who served to keep this country free.  My special thanks goes to those who are serving now.

I also want to thank my late father for his service in the pacific theater of WWII.  I miss you dad.

Jabs came home from school, very sombre. He said they had been learning about Rememberance Day and they all stood for two minutes silence and then sang Taps. (Day is done if you call it something different.) I got very tearful as he was telling me. He told me they had learned alot of facts about why we honour (his word) soldiers at 11 on the 11th of the 11th.
I'm so proud of his school. That was a wonderful thing they did. He was already wearing his poppy and we had talked about it together as we do every year but to cover it in school - well that's how it should be.

I hope all schools did the same today.

Morgan's class has been learning all week about the tomb of the unknown soldier and the soldiers who guard it.  They have been writing essays on what freedom means to them.  Her class learned to fold our flag and the significance of each fold.   She was off today in honor of our veterans.

I was proud of Morgan's school as well.

This is always a very special time of the year for me.  Yesterday was the Marine Corp Birthday, and organization of which I am a proud member.

As a veteran of Viet Nam, I am also proud to have made a contribution to that effort.  On this day though I am especially aware that any sacrifices I made pale in comparison to the thousands who paid the ultimate price in service to their country and I will always salute them.

When I was a kid, we all went to Soldier's Circle at our cemetery...some still do.

It's hard to convey to kids just what the death and sacrifices of these young men meant. Somewhere along the way talking about war and all that goes with it became something not PC I guess.  Sad

In any event, here's to all or soldiers on both sides or the Atlantic; my appreciation for all that has been done for so many years.

"It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country ... in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray-haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives -- the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for their country, for us. All we can do is remember." --Ronald Reagan

I cannot think of any poetic words to say, but want to express my appreciation to all those who serve, or have in the past, to all the families living without their loved ones (past or present) and a special prayer for all those who have suffered physical or psychological disabilities as a result of their service. My heart goes out to you all.

My 4 year old grandson, Jakob,  came home from j.k. today and told me that they had a 'sembly at his school and everyone - "even the big kids, Grandma" were there.  He said they told him why people wear a poppy and we couldn't even convince him to take the poppy off for nap time.

I hope more schools are doing this.  Our children need to know their freedom to run and play is because of the sacrifices made by others.

My hero wrote this, he serves in the USAF and is my best friend and husband;  This is his tribute to Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day:

Quote:
My hero isn't here any more.

Though he has carried the torch of freedom and died on foreign lands, he never considered himself a hero. When he had fallen and could carry it no longer, he always ensured he passed the torch to those who could carry it forward.

My hero was an inspirational teacher.

He taught me how to be noble when he answered his nation's call and died in the trenches during "the Great War" that would end all wars.

My hero taught me valor and the courage to face overwhelming odds when he died on the beaches of Iwo Jima and Normandy.

He taught me to honor the past and remember. I haven't forgotten my hero's war nor how he died fighting it in the bitter cold of the Korean Peninsula.

My hero taught me about integrity and that doing the right thing may not always be the popular thing when he answered the call and died in the rainy jungles of Vietnam.

He taught me about pride and rallying a nation when he died in the smoking oil fields of Kuwait.

My hero taught me that liberty is more important than vengeance when he died in the mountains of Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq.

He taught me the value of teamwork; for in all of his endeavors, he never carried the torch alone.

My hero believed Freedom is worth fighting for--even dying for--and he gave his most precious gift so that I and others could be free.

He also taught me responsibility and commitment; for we find the torch of freedom in our hands now.

My hero isn't here any more.
