nimodepine?
Dec 16th, 2009 at 10:20pm

anyone ever used nimodepine  as an abortive? how about trexamet? i know its just a imitrex derivitive, but, i hear first hand it is more effective and faster than the imitrex subQ. starting verapamil as a prophylactic. 360 mg/day as well.

I've never heard of using a calcium channel blocker as an abortive.  Most CCBs are used as preventatives, not abortives.

As to treximet.  Don't know about ch,  but I was using treximet for migraines, long before it was even developed (I'd take Imitrex and an aleve at the same time).  Didn't work any better.  Treximet is just a fancy name for a combo of aleve and Imitrex (moer expensive because there is no generic equivalent).

Suitable vasodilator agents for use herein include nimodepine, pinacidii, cyclandelate, isoxsuprine, chloroprumazine, halo peridol, Rec 15/2739

Not an abstract regarding CH. but I don't think it's a good idea to apply a vasodilator as an abortive of a CH attack.

In some listings, Verapamil is also listed as a vasodilator - as we know, it also a CCB - which are not true dilators. They function by "relaxing" the constricting/dilating action of smooth muscle tissue.

True, but Verap. isn't used as an abortive agent either.

I guess I just cringe at the notion of a vasodilator as a Ch abortive agent.  Sort of like prescribing nitroglycerin as an abortive.......

I see what you're saying Pegg. I was only trying to say that I don't think it's actually a vasodialtor, but a "relaxer" like my girlfriend Vera.

Aside from all of that: I know this goes against the grain of the general thinking around here, but I'm not convinced that vasodialtion/constriction is the key. Verapamil is believed by some to act on the hypothalamus to help us in lieu of it's vascular effect only. Same with the Triptans. High flow O2 is my best friend, but I can't help wonder if it's effect is more far reaching than just constriction.

I'd have to dig up the articles, but there enough researchers saying this to give me pause. Nitro is an exception that I can't explain, but there is still a lot that we don't know.

Cat has linked to a plethora of articles on this subject several times.
