Cluster headaches and weightlifting
Dec 18th, 2009 at 12:22am

The past two days I've gotten excruciating headaches, I'd say 9's on the kip scale, about a half hour after intense weightlifting.  Is this a coincidence or is there a correlation between weightlifting and an attack?

No, we regularly have this question during the warmer times of year but, I suspect, this applies to any vigorous exercise which elevates body temp.

A new cluster headache precipitant: increased body heat.

Blau JN, Engel HO.

Exercise, a hot bath, or elevated environmental temperature provoked cluster headaches, within 1 h, in 75 out of 200 patients. This new observation accords with recognised precipitants--alcohol, histamine, and gyceryl trinitrate--perhaps via generalised vasodilatation or hypothalamic activation.

Also, lifting is going to temporarily elevate blood pressure in a way that heat or aerobic exercise does not. This could set off switches in vascular tissues that bring on a hit.

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.

i get a lot of pain in my C1-C2 area of my neck associated with the clusters.
Whenever I tried to do any sort of weight lifting I usually aggravate my neck which in turn brings on a cluster.  Very frustrating.  I found swimming to be great but who the heck has access to a lap pool all the time...alternatively who wants to be swimming laps in some community center and have to go run out in -20 celsius to get some oxygen from the car.
I'm wondering what some of you have found to be the best way to stay fit without provoking pain or an attack.
