Random Thought
Dec 30th, 2009 at 11:26pm

I would think in some way cluster headaches could be associated with seasonal affective disorder.  Not explained by.  But there is NO association, no mention whatsoever of CH being linked with SAD.  Although it seems to fit the profile of being influenced by amount of light available at the time, either "too little" or "too much".  At least all of my cycles have for 20 years.  Either November or summer month they have started.  I guess it wouldn't make a difference, just a random thought.  Good night all and painfree nights and days to everyone.

Hi Starry,   Smiley

Been quite awhile since we've had a random thought from you.   Smiley

I sent a thread in a pm along to you, it is some information on the subject that was once posted here and examined closely.  Wink

Saxman,

Saw it first thing when I logged on--We were definitely on the same wavelength!
I think medical people need to do some studies examining any relationship between cluster headache and SAD just to try to understand it better.  Even to try to to understand how seasonal depression (in the winter) or seasonal mania (spring)could influence the headaches.  I have come to believe that that is a very underexplored topic with these headaches--the relationship between mood (very much influenced by light especially in some people) and these terrible headaches.

Many years back, there was a sufferer using full spectrum lights daily to see if what you mention really had an influence on ch.  He had a web page where he was posting results - which were none as I remember.

Interesting thought. Wish it would account for my cycles!  I tend to be a winter to spring episodic sufferer, however, the last few years, it has included a late fall component.  Then, there are the geographical changes!  I would be just fine, minding my own business, off the hit list and then, wham, we would go up to Vermont's northeast Kingdom for our annual vacation in August and Ouch!  A hit a day!  Eventually, I figured out to stop going to Vermont (before I discovered O2, Verapamil, Imitrix) and now, I go prepared! For some, however, it could relate to SAD...  Regardless, more research would benefit us and those who love us!

PFDAN!

Bob,

That is interesting, although I am fairly certain that amount of light does influence the headaches whether it be "too much" or "too little" in terms of day length.  I am not saying in any way that it fully accounts for them but I think it is a factor (at least for episodics--I don't pretend to know anything about the chronic form).
How that fact could influence treatment of the headaches I have no idea.  I just wonder if the HAs could be a manifestation (one symptom) of SAD in some, and I would underline the word some, sufferers.
