Verapamil and CH symptoms
Jan 11th, 2010 at 4:39am

I am now on 240mg of Verapamil a day and finding that the cluster headaches are starting to become less painful (mainly the shadows) but I am still having various other problems such as ringing in the ear, double vision and facial pain.

My question is, are the symptoms of a CH cycle suppose to improve with this medication or is it purely going to help the pain of a CH?

The Neuro is hoping  to double my dose again shortly so am hoping it will help further.

Thanks for reading.

Verapamil is not any sort of pain-killer, it can help prevent CH's from happening, which should also stop the accompanying symptoms such as tearing eye and running nose.

It may help further to prevent CH's, but if these various other problems began when the verapamil was started, these symptoms you should definitely let your doctor know about before increasing, they are not CH symptoms, although some facial pain can be.

If by "still" happening you mean these problems were going on before the verapamil, please consult your doctor about these as they may be signs of something else needing attention.

Hello Kevin, thanks for your reply Smiley

This was the question that I asked my neuro regarding the other symptoms I am getting but he did say that I could have these others symptoms as part of a CH cycle but he said he had not come across it before. I also get a lot of shadows, migraines and tension headaches and always feel pain in my head and only really get the CH once or twice a week (it has been 6 months). My head feels as though I need to pop it!

I have tried O2, which has stopped a CH in around 10 minutes which has been the only thing which has ever touched the pain.

I am waiting for my next appointment but will let the Neuro know that although it seems to be helping some of the pain, I am still having the other symptoms.

I too am on verapamil 480 mg a day and also have ringing in my ear since i started! I think the ringing is part of the cluster cycle because only my right ear is ringing(I cluster on the right side) makes sense to me since when in cycle that side is under SO much DISTRESS! just wanted to share that

That can be understood appearing to some, but not a cluster symptom and elusively mentioned as a verap side effect.  Always concerning is double vision.

I agree that the double vision is concerning and when I first went to hospital with the pain I had a CT scan to rule out various things that the doctors thought it could be. I also had various tests on my eyes whilst I was admitted in hospital.

The double vision isn't something I have all the time, this happens once every couple of weeks and sometimes it's when I wake up in pain. But if feels like pulling behind and around my eyes when I do have it and is quite scary.

I have had all of these symptoms before the Verapamil, the only symptom of that medication I have felt was the feeling of my heart racing for the first few days and then after that I haven't felt any side effects at all.

Sorry for confusing the original question and thanks for picking up on it.

I will chase up my appointment and make sure the neuro knows I am still having these symptoms with no change. Even though I have had tests which have shown nothing wrong, it still makes me wonder what is going inside my head!
