Red Wine
Jan 11th, 2010 at 5:29pm

I've been out of cycle for a few weeks.  Last night, after a weekend of running kids to basketball games, taking my mother-in-law shopping, re-shoveling snow and all the other things that weekends entail, Randy and I decided to have a late super together.  We went to a lovely little, quiet place and shared a bottle of red wine.  Half way into my second glass the beast paid me a visit.

I had passed the beer test already and thought it was safe.  Does anyone have trouble with red wine even when out of cycle?

Thanks for the help.

PF wishes,

Jeannie

My experience may not be like many others but when I'm out of cycle I'm able to enjoy EVERYTHING without risk. Others, I've read here, don't partake ever, as it can trigger.

Just lucky I guess. But my feeling is that if I'm going to deal with CH in cycle, when I'm out of cycle I'm going to do everything I can, particularly those things the beast forbids.

Several years ago I found a single study from Europe which said: red wine and all distilled spirits were triggers for CH; white wine was not. You know about beer....

Like Scott...when episodic and out of cycle...darn near everything OK. With TWO exceptions...red wine and MSG. Still recall with horror, anger, disbelief, and indignation the kip 9+ I "enjoyed" after a bottle of NO ALCOHOL red wine one Thanksgiving.

And an irony....this Christmas I was presented with TWO bottles of very expensive RED wine by a wealthy and grateful customer..........expect that my brother truly enjoyed them....... Cry

Best,

I used to be able to enjoy a glass of red wine out of cycle until last night.  I guess my CH morphed this past cycle and has taken away one life's pleasures from me.  It really stinks. Angry

Scotch

Once you get into it, you'll forget all about wine, regardless of its color.

I have had a case of assorted red wine aging since the beast showed up in my life.  After drinking red wine, I got my first ch.  Tried to have a glass a few times, always the same result.   Sad

Not sure if it's because without the alternative methods of treatment I'm chronic, or what, but all I usually drink is red wine.

Don't dare give me a pilsner style beer or I'm in a world of hurt.  With alternatives or without.  But red wine is not an issue for me.

When I went into remission last cycle I was PF for a week and then had one CH out of the blue during the day 2 weeks later without a trigger.  Since then (3 months later) I have had no hits.  I drink red wine several times a week with dinner.   I guess my point is everybody is different and i've heard many of getting random hits.
Whether they were triggered or not, who knows.  All I know is that I avoid ALL triggers while in cycle.  You're only playing with fire at that point.

Umm, all I drink out of cycle is single malt scotch.  But it's one of the biggest triggers DURING a cycle.  Even the smell can sometimes elicit a shadow as a conditioned response.

Maybe you just didn't wait long enough Jeannie.  I'd try it again in a month.  As with so many chronics...I don't have any triggers.  One of the very few upsides to CH.   Undecided

I thought of that too, Linda.  I may try again in the future,  here at home, sitting next to my 02. Wink

Just before my cycle started I discovered a wine from Argentina that I have fallen in love with. Hopefully I can enjoy a glass or two again sometime.  I like whites too but not as much as I do reds.  I do get random hits as well.  Maybe that was just one of them.

It is so strange to me that episodics have triggers and chronics don't.   I guess it shouldn't be though.  After all, CH is a strange condition.

I have trouble with red wine as well, so I waited 3 months after my cycle to have any.  I have had a glass or two 3 or 4 times with no HA...but since the first drink, I have had very minor shadows off and on that haven't gotten any worse whether I have a glass now or not.  It is interesting as this has never happened before.  Of course, I don't drink often so I am not a good test subject.  My cardiologist told me to drink red wine and I do so when I remember.  I love my coffee best.

Jon...

I guess I should have said that it is strange to me that MOST episodics have triggers and MOST chronics don't.  I know  that CH follow no rules.

Are you chronic but have triggers?

Jeannie, I should guess that chronics have learned, over the years, what their triggers are. They then avoid these items 100% of the time so that the topic become moot for them

It's the episodics who need to be on guard since they can use, e.g., red wine, some time and then avoid when in an active period.

Episodic for 24 yrs...chronic for the last 3 1/2. High cycles...low cycles...but always cycle. SOMETIMES there are triggers...sometimes not...it's a weird version. Red wine (ANY alcohol in high cycle), msg, tomatoes (glutamic acid?), and I think chocolate....I avoid them all religiously EXCEPT for tomatoes. Mom, Grandma, Aunts, Cousins were Italian...the beast can have some things, but "it" can't take Iti food away from me!!!!!

Jon

Dang it Brew....if you look up '''overthink" in the dictionary you will find me! I can stand in the woods and complain...."forest, what forest?....too many trees in the way". You DO have a way of simplifying.... that I aspire to.....

Tomorrow, I will be having spaghett (with turkey meatballs doncha know!)...the box of baking soda is READY...THANKS MAN!!!!!!

Red wine is more vasoactive, more likely to put the blood vessels through their paces. For most people, that is good, helps prevent cardiovascular disease. For people with migraines and clusters, more likely to trigger.
