Required Annual Physicals?
Feb 5th, 2010 at 10:54am

I was just told by the nurse at my doctor's office that the insurance companies are requiring annual physicals now in order to continue prescription medications.

Specifically I use Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and take 480mg of Verapamil daily... been doing so for about 5 years now with no issues.

I realize I am getting to the age (48) where I probably need annual physicals, but I was surprised to learn I had to have one before I could get another 12 months of refills.

Anyone else heard of this requirement?

Yup and it's not related to age. Have had to do the same for allergy meds for years and I'm 43.

Yes, true, but whether a requirement of insurance companies or a mechanism to keep us coming, is not clear to me. All I experience is that either I come every six-months or I get cut off the Rx.

But I could also make a less cynical argument from the other side of the questions also. Primarily, Preventive medicine is one of he weakest links in American medical practice and, in countries where it is a strong element of medical practice, their outcomes are rather better than in the U.S.

They told me all patients with blood pressure issues had to have blood work every three months now.  I explained my Verapamil had nothing to do with my blood pressure, explaining it was for my CH's.  She stated that I would only have to have blood work annually with my physical.
