any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Feb 9th, 2010 at 2:05pm

OK...after 20 years of episodic cluster headaches...I finally started my annual post Christmas episode with a stash of cluster buster treatment.  I've not had any meds in my body since last spring, and have followed all the clusterbuster suggestions including making the tea.

I've had four doses now...ranging from 5 to 7 days apart.  Each one was on an empty stomache.  I've reached level 1+ to level 2+ each time.  I don't have a scale but the results have been pretty consistent...meaniing smaller amounts resulted in level 1.5 and larger amounts resulted in reaching level 2+

After all that I'm still getting hit albeit mostly shadows and kipp 2-3 at most.   Nothing like the normal bashing I typically get.   No complaints there but I want it gone gone gone.  I'm leaving for a 4 week work trip to Puerto Rico on Monday and I'm concerned about procurring O2 there.

Do I keep trying?  Wait it out?  Accept it isn't going to work for me?  Any suggestions at all would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would suggest talking to the Pros on the clusterbuster chat board.  Somebody there should have some answers.  I'm wishing you some PF time through your trip.  Take Imitrex injections or energy drinks as an alternative to O2 if you can't get it.

Your arterial pH could be low...  too much acid...  If that's the case, none of the preventatives or abortives (even the botanicals) will work at maximum effectiveness...

A low pH can keep your vascular system in a constant state of vasodilation.  Our bodies sense the low pH and assume it's due to elevated CO2 levels so dilates the arteries to increase blood flow to the lungs to remove excess CO2.  This condition tends to make the cluster headache triggering mechanism more effective with an increase in the frequency, intensity, and duration of our attacks...

I take 4 to 6 calcium citrate tablets with vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc a day when I go into a high cycle...  They act as a buffer so will raise the pH of your system back up to neutral, and that tends to constrict the arteries back to normal...

Take care,

V/R, Batch

is there a way to check the vascular systems pH level?  is it the system or the whole bodies pH level?

Kurt,

I use pH test strips from pH ION and measure my saliva...  You can order them over the Internet...  I take the saliva readings three times a day at the same time each day and average them for a daily average.  Saliva pH is a little different than arterial pH but it will parallel...  You're basically looking for a trend where the frequency, intensity, and duration of your attacks drops as the daily average pH rises...

If you take your saliva pH as soon as you detect an attack starting or as soon as you awake with one, you should see a pH reading below your daily average...  If you take a second saliva pH reading 5 minutes after the abort with oxygen therapy you should see an increase in the pH back up to near or above your daily average.

Here's what my pH profile looked like the last time I tracked it for two weeks.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

I also used a finger pulse oximeter to measure my oxygen saturation as soon as I woke up and again 5 minutes after the abort with oxygen therapy.

I can send you the excel spreadsheet to track and plot your saliva pH if you're interested.

I still push the calcium citrate tablets with vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc...  They can't hurt and may even do your bones a favor...

Hope this helps.

Take care,
